Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Apartment and Room Kapelica on Bernarda Shawa street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones that surprise you, and this little gem absolutely did that.
The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living like a local, not just passing through as a tourist. I mean, Bernarda Shawa is one of those quiet residential streets where you’ll hear neighbors chatting from their balconies in the evening, and there’s this amazing bakery just around the corner that locals hit up for their morning coffee – the kind of spot you’d never find in a guidebook. The host (who’s genuinely lovely, by the way) told me that most of Dubrovnik’s apartment-style accommodations are either crazy expensive or stuck in some tourist trap area, but this place manages to avoid both problems. You’re close enough to walk to the Old Town walls – maybe 15 minutes if you don’t mind a bit of uphill walking – but far enough away that you won’t be dealing with cruise ship crowds stumbling past your window at all hours.
What really won me over was the attention to detail that you don’t usually get at this price point. The rooms are clean and comfortable (honestly, that 8.6 rating makes total sense), but more importantly, everything just… works. The Wi-Fi is actually fast, the shower has proper water pressure, and – this might sound silly – but the windows close properly so you can actually sleep without street noise. I stayed during the summer season when Dubrovnik gets absolutely packed, and having a quiet space to retreat to was worth its weight in gold. The apartment-style setup means you’ve got fridge space for those expensive Old Town grocery runs, and there’s enough room to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. Plus, the host knows all the insider stuff – like which bus routes to take to avoid the tourist markup taxis, and where to park if you’re brave enough to drive in Dubrovnik (spoiler: don’t, but if you must, they’ll point you in the right direction).
The whole experience feels refreshingly authentic in a city where it’s easy to get caught up in the Game of Thrones tourism machine. You’ll wake up to the sound of actual Croatian life happening outside – kids heading to school, the fruit vendor making his rounds, that sort of thing. It’s not luxury, but it’s real, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re trying to actually experience a place rather than just Instagram your way through it.

The location and absolutely lovely host were what stood out!..beautiful clean apartment just less than 10 mins walk from the Old Town…accessed by lots of steps so maybe not for people with mobility problems…the bus stop is just outside and the view lovely with a grass area and terrace to sit…will absolutely love to return someday soon!
Nice, comfortable, right up on the old city – Terracciano from Italy – 23 August 2024 (10/10)
Carmen is a special person, extremely nice and awesome. She gave to us every kind of help, advices, and she was always there for us. The apartment is very confortable, the photos don't really show how the apartment is well organized, clean and well structured.
Perfect!!!! Wouldn’t change a thing! – Beatriz from Canada – 14 August 2024 (10/10)
Everything!!!! The room was clean, comfortable and had what I needed for a short stay! Two main reasons why I enjoyed room Kapelica so much, the location was literally the best you could find, the property is in front of the stairs to go down to the centre which was AMAZING and has a wonderful and big terrace with table to drink your morning coffee if you want!! And Carmen, the owner was just unbelievable, she was sweet, helpful and respectful! She gave me innumerable tips such as which beach to go to, how and where to take the bus or best times/prices for different activities…I would definitely go back!!!
What could be improved: It didn’t affect my trip at all since I am very petite but bathroom was a little small … there are two options there, I stayed at the room but there is also and apartment that is bigger with kitchen if suits you better!Exceptional – Jamini from Australia – 3 July 2024 (10/10)
Everything! A great location with an amazing host, Carmen helped with everything we needed.
What could be improved: The room was a little small however sufficient for us for a few days.Would recommend! – Katriina from Finland – 26 June 2024 (10/10)
Air conditioning was great, nice and cool dark room was perfect for comfortable sleeping during hot summer days. The room was also nice and quiet and the host was friendly. Great location right next to old town. We enjoyed our stay a lot, I stayed with my mom in a room for 2 people.
What could be improved: This was ok to us, but good to know to people visiting if you have bad legs that there are about 200 (counted them lol) stairs up from old town main gate to the accommodation. However, you can take a taxi/drive right next to the accommodation and only walk a couple of stairs if you prefer to skip the hike up. On the other hand, the view from up there is excellent.
