You know what struck me first about Apartment Marilyn? The address itself – Ulica kardinala Stepinca is one of those streets that tourists usually rush past on their way to the Old Town, but honestly, that’s exactly why staying here works so well. You’re close enough to walk to Pile Gate in about 15 minutes (downhill, which your legs will appreciate), but far enough away that you’re not dealing with cruise ship crowds stumbling past your window at 6 AM.

The apartment itself feels like someone’s actual home rather than a sterile hotel room – I mean, there’s real personality here. The owner clearly knows what travelers need because you’ll find all those little things that fancy hotels somehow miss: a proper coffee maker (not just those sad instant packets), enough outlets near the bed for your phone charger, and – this might sound silly but it matters – decent water pressure in the shower. The 4-star rating is spot on; it’s not trying to be the Hilton, but everything works the way it should. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night. That whole area sort of settles down after dinner, so you can actually sleep with the windows open and catch that Mediterranean breeze without listening to drunk tourists singing football chants until 3 AM.

Here’s the thing about this location that you won’t realize until you’re there – you’re positioned perfectly for the real Dubrovnik experience. Walk five minutes in one direction and you hit a little bakery where locals grab their morning burek (the cheese one is incredible, by the way). Walk ten minutes the other way and you’re at that gorgeous stretch where the city walls meet the sea, but without the selfie-stick crowds because most people approach from the main tourist route. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you factor in that the host actually responds to messages – like, quickly – and seems genuinely invested in making sure you know about things like which grocery store has the best produce or when the morning fish market is worth visiting. Plus, and this is huge if you’re driving, there’s actually parking nearby that doesn’t cost more than your dinner. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to feel like I was living in Dubrovnik rather than just checking it off a bucket list.
