Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Apartment Martin? It’s tucked away on this tiny street called Poljana Mrtvo Zvono – which translates to “Dead Bell Square” if you’re curious – and honestly, the name sounds way more ominous than it actually is. I mean, you’re literally steps from Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main drag, but somehow this little pocket feels completely removed from all the tourist chaos. The apartment sits in this gorgeous old stone building that’s probably been here longer than most countries have existed, and there’s something really satisfying about staying somewhere that feels authentically part of the Old Town fabric rather than just dropped into it.

The thing about staying here is that you get this perfect balance – you’re close enough to everything that you can stumble back after dinner without navigating a maze of cobblestones for twenty minutes, but far enough off the beaten path that you won’t have cruise ship groups marching past your window at 7 AM. Martin (the owner) actually lives nearby and he’s one of those hosts who knows exactly how much help to offer without being hovering – he’ll tell you which konoba serves the best black risotto and where to buy groceries without the tourist markup, but he’s not going to knock on your door asking if you need anything every few hours. The apartment itself has that lived-in feel that’s way better than sterile hotel rooms; thick stone walls that keep things cool even in peak summer, and windows that open onto the kind of view that makes you understand why people lose their minds over this city.

What really gets me is how this place manages to feel both historic and completely functional. Sure, you’re not going to get a massive bathroom or perfect soundproofing – I mean, it’s a medieval city, not a Marriott – but everything works well and the character more than makes up for any modern conveniences you might miss. The location is honestly unbeatable if you want to experience Dubrovnik like someone who actually lives here rather than just passing through. You can walk to the city walls in about three minutes, grab morning coffee at one of the local spots before the day-trippers arrive, and you’re close enough to the Pile Gate that meeting tour groups or finding restaurants is never a hassle. That 9.2 rating makes total sense when you consider that most people come here expecting a standard apartment rental and end up feeling like they’ve discovered some kind of secret local hideaway. It’s the sort of place where you’ll find yourself planning your next Dubrovnik trip before you’ve even checked out.

Reviews

  • Great! – Marios from Greece – 11 May 2025 (9/10)

A lot of space. Friendly staff. Really nice view to the walls.

What could be improved: Too many stairs to get there. Could be hard for people with mobility problems or injuries.

  • The perfect place to stay in the Old Town – Kaley from United Kingdom – 14 April 2025 (9/10)

Loved this place! Spotlessly clean, super comfy beds (even the sofa bed), spacious, thoughtfully equipped and an amazing location (right on the city walls) mean this is a top choice if you’re wanting Old Town Dubrovnik. The team running the apartment couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful which makes such a difference. Highly recommend 🙂

  • The perfect location to soak in Dubrovniks Old Town and explore it's ancient walls. – Jason from United Kingdom – 23 March 2025 (10/10)

The hosts were at the apartment when we arrived (although they had sent me clear instructions on retrieving the keys from the lockbox). They were incredibly friendly and helpful and sent us some recommendations for food and activities.
The location was incredible, with the bedroom window opening right onto the old walls with an incredible view of the Adriatic Sea and Lokrum Island. It is quite high up, so takes a lot of stairs through the streets to reach, but it's so worth it and it's impossible to avoid stairs in Dubrovnik Old Town anyway! The old town is small enough that you never felt too far from the apartment if you needed to retrieve something or drop something off (or visit the loo during a visit to Buza Bar, just down the street, which doesn't have one).

What could be improved: The two spiral staircases between the top floor bedroom and bottom floor bathroom felt a long way in the night time, but it's not really a big deal as long as you have no physical difficulties.

  • Exceptional – Merran from Australia – 26 September 2024 (10/10)

    The location!!

  • Perfect position , wonderful host – Rob from United Kingdom – 20 September 2024 (8/10)

    Position in heart of city

What could be improved: A lot of stairs, if being really picky – bathroom small, toilet downstairs , outside space was in public courtyard

  • Great location, lovely apartment – Shanthy from Hong Kong – 10 August 2024 (10/10)

Located on the wall, the upstairs bedroom opens to the wall and you get a lovely sea view. The apartment was well-equipped, clean and comfortable. The strong and quiet air-conditioning was such a plus especially during the really hot summer days. Friendly and helpful host. Definitely recommend.

What could be improved: Be prepared to climb lots of steps but the apartment is worth it.

  • We highly recommend this place. Our stay was great. – Janet from Philippines – 18 July 2024 (9/10)

The views from the apartment were incredible. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were very spacious, and the airconditioning was perfect. Everything was clean and the washer was a bonus.

What could be improved: We wish the kitchen would have had a little more basic supplies like salt and pepper. It really is a lot of steps to get up, however. Well-worth it if you are young and can climb the stairs. Everything else was great.

  • Superb – Peggy from Ireland – 2 July 2024 (9/10)

The location was very good close to everything. The host gave us some very useful advice.

What could be improved: The bathroom was on the ground floor and the bedroom was up 2 flights of a spiral staircase. A bit awkward during the night.

  • This property was a major part of our enjoyment of Dubrovnik making it a unique and special experience. – Lisa from Australia – 29 June 2024 (10/10)

Sensational and unique location in historic Dubrovnik right on the wall with views from the main bedroom. Fully equipped apartment with everything we needed to enjoy our stay – as well as cook and clean our clothes. Even had an outside area where we could relax. Awesome helpful host!

What could be improved: Didn’t love the spiral staircase – getting to the bathroom at night was tricky, but it was a small price to pay.

  • Exceptional – Peter from Australia – 22 May 2024 (10/10)

What a location…wow. Also an excellent host.
