Hotel Description
You know what hit me first about Apartment Maru? The fact that you’re literally living inside Dubrovnik’s Old Town walls – and I mean actually inside, not just “walking distance” like half the places claim. When you step out the door, you’re already on those iconic limestone streets that everyone comes to Croatia to see. No shuttle buses, no twenty-minute walks with your luggage, just… you’re there.
The apartment itself is honestly pretty solid for what you’re paying. Two bedrooms that actually fit real furniture (not those cramped European “bedrooms” that barely squeeze in a double bed), and the city view they promise? Well, it’s legitimate – you can see over the terracotta rooftops toward the harbor, which is especially gorgeous around sunset when all those tour boats are heading back. The kitchen’s properly equipped too, which matters more than you’d think since eating out for every meal in Dubrovnik will drain your budget fast. I mean, we’re talking €25 for a basic pasta dish at most places near Stradun.
What I really appreciated – and this is something you only figure out after staying in a few Old Town places – is that it’s positioned away from the main drag where those massive cruise ship crowds funnel through during the day. You’re close enough to pop over to Onofrio’s Fountain or climb the city walls in five minutes, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the chaos of Placa street right outside your window. The stone walls are thick enough that you don’t hear much street noise anyway, though honestly, Old Town gets pretty quiet after 10 PM once the day-trippers head back to their resort hotels.
The only real quirk – and this is just Old Town life, not specific to Maru – is that you’ll be dragging your suitcase over cobblestones to get there. No cars allowed inside the walls, obviously. But the hosts were pretty clear about the logistics beforehand, and it’s really not that bad unless you’re the type who packs like you’re moving permanently. Also, the air conditioning works well, which you’ll definitely want if you’re visiting between June and September when Dubrovnik turns into a bit of a furnace.
Honestly, for a four-star place right in the heart of everything, it delivers on what matters most: location, space, and that authentic feeling of actually living in this medieval city rather than just visiting it. Sure, it’s not some fancy resort with a pool and room service, but that’s not why you come to Dubrovnik anyway. You come for those early morning walks on the city walls before the crowds arrive, for stumbling onto hidden squares, for having a glass of Croatian wine on your terrace while watching the sunset paint those ancient walls golden. Apartment Maru puts you right where you need to be for all of that.
