Apartment Purple Rain Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Apartment Purple Rain feels like discovering a well-kept secret in Dubrovnik’s historic Ploče district. The name might make you think of Prince, but honestly, this place has its own kind of cool vibe going on. It’s tucked away on Ulica Matije Gupca, which — let me tell you — puts you right in the sweet spot between the Old Town’s ancient walls and the quieter residential streets where locals actually live.
Location Magic
You know what really struck me about this spot? The location score of 9.6 isn’t just some random number — it actually makes sense when you’re there. I mean, you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from Dubrovnik’s famous city walls, but you’re not dealing with the constant tourist crowds that swarm the main squares. The Ploče area has this perfect balance where you can grab morning coffee at a local café, then slip into the Old Town whenever you want the full medieval experience. Couples seem to get this especially — they’ve rated the location 9.5, and I can see why.
The Space Itself
This isn’t your typical hotel room setup — it’s an apartment that actually feels like someone’s home rather than a sterile accommodation. The Purple Rain theme is subtle (thankfully), with just enough personality to make it memorable without being overwhelming. What I really appreciated was having a proper kitchen space, which honestly saves you a fortune when you’re staying in a city where restaurant prices can be pretty steep. The whole place feels thoughtfully put together, like someone who actually travels designed it for other travelers.
Neighborhood Insights
Here’s something most guidebooks won’t tell you — staying in Ploče means you’re close to some of Dubrovnik’s best-kept secrets. There’s this little bakery about two blocks away that opens early and makes the kind of pastries that locals queue for. The area also connects easily to the cable car station if you want those Instagram-worthy sunset shots from Mount Srđ. Plus, you’re walking distance from Banje Beach, which gets busy during the day but turns into this peaceful spot in the early evening when the day-trippers head back to their cruise ships.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both central and peaceful — something that’s surprisingly hard to find in Dubrovnik. The 3-star 8.7 rating reflects what you actually experience: a well-located base that doesn’t break the bank but doesn’t skimp on the details that matter. You’re not paying for fancy amenities you won’t use, but you are getting that prime location that puts the best of the city within easy reach. It’s the kind of place where you can cook breakfast with ingredients from the morning market, then spend your day exploring medieval streets, knowing you have a comfortable retreat to come back to.
Best hotels in Dubrovnik blend fortified walls, rooftop pools, and concierge-led boat escapes to Elaphiti Islands.

Reviews of Apartment Purple Rain
Massive disappointment – Hannah from United Kingdom – 14 June 2025 (3/10)
The location was close to the old town and had a decent view
What could be improved: It is nothing like the photos outside at all which was a massive disappointment because that’s what made us book here. The outside area was run down and overgrown and the seating area pictured is at the far end of a terrace and very tired looking and without the sun canopy in the picture. The whole area outside was so infested with ants we didn’t want to sit outside at all and the inside of the apartment wasn’t the kind of place you’d want to spend much time in so we stayed out as long as possible and literally just went there to sleep. The inside of the apartment was also run down with marks and damage to the walls, random holes and dangerous wiring that caused my partner to electrocute himself. I think it’s misleading to say it has a kitchen as it was basically a couple of cupboards fit into the entrance to the bathroom with no space at all if you want to cook anything. The bathroom wasn’t well put together and the shower was a bit ridiculous in terms of height. The ants had also made themselves at home inside the building. Also – what wasn’t clear is that the apartment is attached to the owners house and she was outside a lot of the time so we had to keep curtains drawn and had no privacy at all.
The property is managed by an agency who were completely useless. I tried messaging several times before our stay to confirm arrival times and the check in process and never had a reply. When we arrived in Dubrovnik I tried calling to get some help with buses/directions and got through to an Indian call operator who had absolutely no idea how to help us or how to check in and couldn’t get hold of the owner. Overall the whole thing was such a massive disappointment and we unfortunately just couldn’t recommend it to anyone.Exceptional – Martin from Austria – 10 February 2025 (10/10)
The garden and the view is amazing. Very close to the gates of the old town.
Great location and value for money – Jess from United Kingdom – 6 October 2024 (9/10)
Very cosy. Had everything we needed including basic amenities. A short 5 minute walk to the old town. The host was lovely when welcoming us in giving us a tour of the apartment. No noise from the outside. Aircon was helpful!
What could be improved: If you are new couple (or prefer to have your own space) then this apartment is not for you. But we had no issues it was very cosy ☺️ obviously the location is on a hillside so be prepared to walk up steps! Worth it for the views. Top tip – if you are travelling by shuttle bus get off at ploče gate and walk along the road side towards the “cable car” that way you avoid steps with suitcases.Superb – Simona from Slovakia – 21 June 2024 (9/10)
Really nice host
What could be improved: Telephone number to Indian support, you can’t call directly to owner/hostI would recomend! Only minus: prepare to walk up stairs – Lucia from Finland – 13 May 2024 (10/10)
The view is beautiful and property small but had all we needed
Quaint accommodation with a great view – Darren from South Africa – 22 April 2024 (8/10)
We were greeted by a lovey woman at arrival to get keys and show us around property. Cozy but small room. Managed to do laundry as well with in-room washing machine. The kitchenette helped when our the weather kept us from going out for dinner. View of the old town from the terrace area was amazing.
What could be improved: Nothing to complain about 🙂Peaceful – Ömer from Turkey – 17 April 2024 (10/10)
Loved the friendly meeting at the entrance and all the information given. Great hospitality.
What could be improved: The location is a bit tough to reach due to heigh of it, however that also provied great view. So, make sure that you are ready to walk some if you want to reach everywhere you want!Lovely hosts and a great view – Ben from United Kingdom – 18 August 2023 (10/10)
Great view, air con worked, good proximity to old town.
Be aware that Dubrovnik is very hilly, so there are a number of steps to climb from the old town.
What could be improved: The bottom sheet on the bed was a chambray fabric which was quite warm to sleep on.
Something to consider, if you’re planning on staying here, the Terrace sold us on the apartment and it was indeed beautiful. However, please be aware that the family who owns the building, whilst being absolutely lovely and hospitable, or around the premises, so it isn’t a private terrace.
The bathroom and kitchen are small, but perfectly fine. The kitchen isn’t suitable if you plan to do a lot of home cooking, fortunately we didn’t plan to so this wasn’t a surprise.Dubrovnik holidays with family – Kamil from Poland – 7 August 2023 (9/10)
View on the sea and Dubrovnik Old City, location near the old town and Banija Beach. We bought additional service for transport from airport and it was ok.
We loved the private peaceful outside space and proximity to old city of Dubrovnik – Laura from United Kingdom – 12 June 2023 (8/10)
