You know what struck me first about Apartments Monica? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Lapad, but you’re actually only a 15-minute walk from the main beach area – and I mean a pleasant walk, not some uphill slog. The building itself is pretty typical for this part of Dubrovnik, white stone with those green shutters, but Monica has clearly put some thought into the details.

I stayed here twice over the past couple years, and honestly, it’s become my go-to when I don’t want to deal with the tourist circus in the Old Town but still want easy access to everything. The apartments are what you’d call “thoughtfully simple” – they’re not trying to be fancy, but everything works properly (which, let me tell you, isn’t always a given in Croatia). The kitchenettes actually have decent-sized fridges and real coffee makers, not those tiny hotel room things. Monica herself is usually around during check-in, and she’s one of those hosts who genuinely wants to help without being pushy about it. She’ll tell you which bus to take to avoid the crowds, or where to grab groceries without tourist markup – stuff you’d never figure out on your own.

What really won me over is the location in Lapad. Look, everyone goes straight to the Old Town, but this neighborhood has this lovely lived-in feel where you’ll see locals doing their morning shopping and kids playing in the small parks. You’re close enough to walk to Lapad Beach when you want that crystal-clear Adriatic water, but when you come back in the evening, it’s actually quiet. No late-night party noise echoing off ancient stone walls, just the occasional sound of someone coming home from dinner. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be a luxury hotel – it’s just doing the apartment thing really well. The WiFi works throughout (tested it extensively while working remotely), the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, and the beds are comfortable enough that I actually sleep well. Plus, there’s parking available, which is honestly half the battle in Dubrovnik. If you’re planning to explore beyond the city – maybe drive up to Cavtat or hit some of the smaller beaches – having a car that’s not costing you 30 euros a day to park is pretty liberating.
