You know what struck me first about Tapera? It’s tucked away in Lapad in this quiet residential pocket where you actually hear birds in the morning instead of tour buses rumbling by at 7 AM. I mean, don’t get me wrong – you’re still only about 15 minutes from the Old Town madness, but there’s something refreshing about staying where actual Dubrovnik locals live their daily lives.

The one-bedroom setup here is honestly more spacious than I expected for a 3-star place. The terrace – and this is key – actually faces a proper garden, not some sad concrete courtyard like you sometimes get. I spent most evenings out there with a bottle of local wine (there’s a decent grocery store called Konzum maybe a 3-minute walk away), watching the light fade over the neighborhood’s red-tiled roofs. The apartment itself feels lived-in but well-maintained, you know? Like someone’s grandmother kept it spotless but didn’t go overboard with fancy renovations. The kitchen has everything you need if you want to grab fresh stuff from the morning market – though honestly, the bed was comfortable enough that I slept in most days and missed the early vendors.

What I really appreciated was how the owner, this lovely Croatian woman, actually lives nearby and genuinely seems to care about the place. Check-in was smooth (she met me right at the apartment), and when I had a minor issue with the WiFi, she had someone over within an hour. Lapad itself is brilliant for people who want to experience Dubrovnik without feeling like they’re trapped in a tourist snow globe. There’s this great little restaurant called Dubrovnik about a 10-minute walk away where I had the best black risotto of my life, and the locals there were chatting with the owner like old friends. The beach situation is solid too – Lapad Bay is right there, and while it gets busy during peak summer, it’s got that neighborhood feel where Croatian families bring their kids and grandparents. Parking can be a bit tricky (the narrow streets weren’t exactly designed for rental cars), but there’s usually something available if you’re patient. I’d definitely come back here, especially in shoulder season when you can enjoy the terrace without melting and the whole area feels more relaxed.
