Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Design Studio” in the name, I was expecting some sterile, minimalist place that looked great on Instagram but felt cold in person. Boy, was I wrong. This little gem on Ulica za Rokom actually manages to pull off that modern boutique vibe while keeping things warm and livable. The location is pretty much perfect if you want to be in Old Town without dealing with the absolute chaos of Stradun during cruise ship season. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Pile Gate, but tucked away enough that you’re not hearing drunk tourists stumbling back at 2 AM.

The rooms have this smart industrial-chic thing going on – exposed stone walls (because, you know, 14th-century building) mixed with sleek fixtures and really comfortable beds. What I loved most was how they kept the old architectural details but didn’t go overboard with the “ye olde Croatia” theme that some places in Dubrovnik beat to death. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for Old Town standards, and honestly, the water pressure is better than what you’ll find in most Croatian hotels. Small thing, but when you’ve been walking those marble streets all day, a proper shower matters. The air conditioning actually works too – not always a given in these historic buildings during July and August.

Here’s what really sold me on this place: the staff actually knows the neighborhood. I mean, they live here, they grew up here, and when you ask about where to grab coffee that’s not tourist-priced, they’ll point you toward that little place on Od Sigurate that locals actually use. They helped me figure out the best times to hit the city walls (early morning or late afternoon, trust me) and which konobas in the area are worth your money versus which ones are just coasting on location. The breakfast setup is simple but solid – good Croatian cheeses, proper coffee, fresh bread from the bakery down the street. Nothing fancy, but everything tastes like it’s supposed to.

The whole area gets pretty quiet after the day-trippers leave, which is honestly one of the best parts about staying here. You’ll hear church bells and maybe some ambient chatter from the nearby restaurants, but it’s not the party-hostel scene you might expect. Parking is… well, it’s Old Town Dubrovnik, so forget about driving anywhere near the hotel. But they’ll sort you out with information about the lots outside the walls, and really, once you’re inside, you won’t need a car anyway. The 9.2 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it nails everything it’s actually going for. Good location, comfortable rooms, helpful people, and that slightly boutique feel without the boutique attitude. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Dubrovnik rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.
