I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hedera Estate on Majkovska Street – it’s tucked away in this quiet residential area that honestly feels more like where locals actually live than touristy Dubrovnik. But that’s exactly what makes this place special. The A28 designation threw me off initially (I mean, who names their hotel with a number and letter combo?), but it turns out this is part of a small collection of properties, and this particular one sits in what I’d call the sweet spot of the city.

The location is actually brilliant once you figure it out. You’re about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town walls – close enough that you’re not dealing with buses or taxis, but far enough that you escape the cruise ship crowds that absolutely swarm the historic center during peak season. I stayed here in July, and while the main tourist areas were completely packed, Majkovska Street stayed refreshingly quiet. There’s this little bakery about three blocks down that the hotel staff recommended, and honestly, their burek was better than anything I found in the touristy spots. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel where you’ll see locals hanging laundry and kids playing in small courtyards – it gives you a much more authentic sense of how people actually live in Dubrovnik.

What really sold me on Hedera Estate was the attention to detail that you don’t get at the big chain hotels. The rooms have this modern Mediterranean vibe without feeling sterile – think clean lines but with local stone accents and these gorgeous shutters that actually block out the light (crucial for those summer sunrise wake-ups). The air conditioning works properly, which I can’t say for every place I’ve stayed in Croatia. Parking was straightforward, which is honestly a minor miracle in this city – they have a small lot that’s included, and trust me, trying to find street parking in Dubrovnik is basically impossible. Check-in was smooth, and the woman at reception spoke perfect English and gave me this hand-drawn map with all her personal recommendations marked out. That 8.7 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be luxury, but everything just works exactly as it should. If you want to experience Dubrovnik without feeling like you’re staying in a tourist bubble, this is your spot.
