The Experience

Hotel Splendid

You know what struck me first about Hotel Splendid?

You know what struck me first about Hotel Splendid? The name sounds a bit grand for what’s actually a really solid, unpretentious three-star place – but honestly, that’s part of its charm. It sits right on Masarykov put in Lapad, which if you don’t know Dubrovnik well, is this quieter peninsula about 15 minutes from the Old Town madness. I mean, you’re not stumbling back from late-night drinks on Stradun, but you’re also not dealing with cruise ship crowds outside your window at 7 AM either. The bus stop is literally a two-minute walk, and the 6 line runs pretty frequently into the city center, so it’s actually more convenient than some of those “centrally located” places that charge twice as much.

The hotel itself feels like it was probably renovated sometime in the last decade – everything’s clean and functional without being flashy. My room had this little balcony overlooking the neighborhood, and you could catch glimpses of the Adriatic between the apartment buildings if you leaned out just right. The air conditioning worked well (crucial for those sweltering July afternoons), and the shower had decent water pressure, which honestly is sometimes a gamble in this part of Croatia. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – Lapad has this residential feel where locals actually live, not just tourist central where there’s always someone dragging luggage across cobblestones. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. When I asked about beach recommendations, the guy didn’t just point me toward the obvious Lapad Bay – he mentioned this smaller spot near the Hotel Kompas where the locals go, with better snorkeling and fewer umbrellas.

The breakfast spread was… well, it’s hotel breakfast, but they had fresh fruit and decent coffee, plus those little Croatian pastries that I kept going back for. Pool area’s nothing special, but it’s clean and gets sun most of the day if you need to decompress after trudging around the city walls. I’d say this place hits that sweet spot for travelers who want something reliable without the tourist markup. It’s got an 8.2 rating for good reason – not because it’s luxury, but because it delivers exactly what it promises. If you’re the type who needs to be in the thick of everything, maybe look elsewhere. But if you want a base that’s comfortable, reasonably priced, and gives you a little taste of how Dubrovnik feels when it’s not performing for visitors, Hotel Splendid actually lives up to its name in a quiet, practical way.

Very nice room, friendly staff, good location, lovely gardens and beach

What could be improved: Some more vegan options at breakfast would be good but we're used to this and we managed OK with the choices offered

Great location, easy walk around the coastline. Good breakfast. Perfect for a short stay if you’re catching a cruise.

What could be improved: Needs a little update but very comfortable beds and pillows

The location was beautiful and away from the crowds in old town. The hotel is on a bus route that made it easy to grt to the center when we wanted to get to tours. Stunning views from the terraces and restaurant of the Adriatic sea. The hotel staff is excellent. That was my experience throughout Croatia.

What could be improved: I enjoyed having breakfast buffet included, the food was abundant but rather mediocre. Eggs were very cold and bacon was undercooked.
There is a lovely restaurant right by the sea where you can order off the menu, but it closes at 5pm, which means you are limited to the buffet at the main restaurant. That might change in high season. To the staff’s credit, they did let us order from the dinner menu, as my friend is gluten intolerant. The staff is exceptional.

A very nice hotel especially during the summer months. It has a nice outdoor area and the location is great. Parking is on site in front of the hotel. Breakfast was good and the room was clean and a good size. We also had dinner there, as they offered a special rate for guests. Croatia is quite expensive, so this was welcomed. The hotel does not have an indoor pool, but their sister hotel which is about 2 minutes by walk, offers this at a charge of around €11 per person if I am not mistaken, which is a bit high for just a quick dip. Massages however are at a great price though!

What could be improved: It would have been nice for the pool to have had a lower charge for entry.

Great hotel , staff were friendly and helpful and very polite and attentive. The rooms were clean and had a nice sea view . The breakfast was a good , basic but did the job . All in all great hotel and good value for money . The bus to the old town stops right outside and is about 10/15 mins away so it’s a great location, also a short walk to the local restaurants in the lapad area so a nice cheaper alternative for food and drinks to the old town which can be expensive.

Location was so close to Old Town, Beautiful surroundings and right on the water. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Bus just outside hotel to the old town. Rooms were great and spacious.

What could be improved: Nothing really to complain about but if had to mention one thing would be the breakfast. It had an ok selection but not usually what we would go for. but would definitely get something to eat and wouldn't leave hungry.
