The Experience

Hotel Vis

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Vis?

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Vis? It’s actually got this really solid, unpretentious vibe that’s exactly what you need after battling the crowds in Dubrovnik’s Old Town. I mean, let’s be honest – staying inside the city walls sounds romantic until you’re dragging your suitcase over those ancient stones at 2 PM in July heat. Hotel Vis sits in Lapad, which is this quieter residential area that locals actually live in, and honestly, it’s maybe a 15-minute bus ride to all the Game of Thrones madness everyone comes here for.

The hotel itself is one of those classic three-star places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. My room had this slightly dated but clean feel – think sturdy furniture and linens that have seen better days but are perfectly functional. What I really appreciated was how quiet it got at night, especially compared to some places I’ve stayed closer to Stradun where you hear every tourist stumbling back from dinner until 3 AM. The staff here seemed genuinely local (not just imported for tourist season), and they had this refreshingly straightforward approach to hospitality – no fake smiles, but they’ll sort you out if you need directions to that little bakery down on Masarykov Put that does incredible burek in the mornings.

Location-wise, you’re actually in a sweet spot that most first-time visitors miss. Lapad has this proper neighborhood feel with actual grocery stores and cafes where you won’t pay tourist prices for a coffee. There’s a decent beach about ten minutes’ walk away – nothing spectacular, but it’s got that pebbly Adriatic charm and way fewer selfie sticks than Banje Beach. The bus connections are honestly pretty reliable (route 6 becomes your best friend), and parking isn’t the absolute nightmare it is closer to the old city walls. I’d say this place works best for people who want to experience Dubrovnik without feeling like they’re trapped in a UNESCO theme park 24/7. It’s solid, straightforward, and gives you room to breathe between all that medieval architecture and cruise ship chaos.

Private beach is a great touch. There is a beautiful cliff walk path with restaurants & bar in just 10 mins walking distance. The sunset view from this area is beautiful. They have a very good and wide assortiment for buffet breakfast. Kind and helpful staff. The outside seating of the hotel bar overlooking mountain and sea was blissful.

What could be improved: Nothing specific. The only remark is that they have a central heating/cooling system for rooms. So, each room can not be cooled or heated to the likeness of the guests. For us, it was quite warm in the room, so we had to keep the balcony doors open always even when we were out. But other aspects of this hotel shadowed this one item.

The breakfast was very good, all staff very kind and very good location to relax. They also have a dinner that worth it.

What could be improved: They gave us two single beds together, so it was not very comfortable to sleep in couple.

A very nice stay at the Vis. In a good location, with many cheap transport options available be it a bus from outside the hotel or an uber. Also close to restaurants, bars and nice walks.

Exceptional breakfast on the veranda. Comfortable room, very clean and neat. View over the ocean if booked as such. Friendly staff, efficient service. Right next to a bus stop directly to the old town. Walking distance to restaurants, beach and take away. Only small concern was the luggage storage facility being simply a section behind the reception desk, which didn’t feel very secure.

Really loved this place. The buffet breakfast and the view from our sea room was incredible!! The beds were comfy and our room was clean. Our wifi was really slow and often disconnected from where we were staying in the sea view room, and our AC didn’t seem to be working very well which may be an issue if it was a lot warmer. All in all though I loved it and will definitely return.
