Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Joy Apartments? The location is absolutely perfect – and I mean that in the most practical way possible. Walking down Ispod mira street, you’re literally steps from Stradun (that’s the main marble street everyone walks down), but somehow you dodge most of the cruise ship crowds that flood the more obvious spots. I stayed here in late September, and honestly, while tourists were still queuing for photos at the Rector’s Palace, I could slip out my door and grab morning coffee at one of those tiny local places before the masses even figured out where they were.

The apartments themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place in Old Town, which actually means quite a lot here. The stone walls are thick – really thick – so you get that authentic Dubrovnik feel without hearing every conversation from the street below. My unit had this little kitchenette that was way more useful than I expected, especially since groceries from the small market near Pile Gate cost about half what hotel breakfast would’ve run me. The Wi-Fi worked fine (always a concern in these medieval buildings), and the air conditioning was a godsend during those sticky August nights – though I visited in shoulder season, so can’t speak to how it handles peak summer heat. One small thing that bugged me: the shower pressure was a bit weak, but honestly, that’s pretty standard for Old Town properties where the plumbing has to work around 14th-century stone foundations.

What really sells this place is how it puts you right in the rhythm of local life. You’re close enough to Onofrio’s Fountain to hear the water trickling if you open your windows at night, but far enough from the main tourist arteries that you actually get some peace after dinner. The owner – I think his name was Marko – gave me this whole rundown of which restaurants the locals actually eat at (skip the places right on Stradun, obviously) and mentioned that if you head out around 7 AM, you can walk the city walls with maybe a dozen other people instead of hundreds. That 8.7 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it’s smart, well-located, and run by people who actually understand what travelers need. I mean, where else can you stay inside UNESCO World Heritage walls, walk to everything worth seeing, and still have a quiet spot to decompress after dodging tour groups all day?

  • Amazing stay! – Jake from United Kingdom – 4 September 2024 (10/10)

Amazing location within the old town. Lovely little apartment, modern with full kitchen facilities. 30 seconds away from a nice cliff side bar where you can swim and do some cliff jumping! The host was so helpful throughout, anything we needed she would be there to help. Can be quite difficult to find but the host let us know in advance with the details and even let us check in early which was a huge bonus!! We will definitely be stopping here again when we visit the amazing town of Dubrovnik.

    What could be improved: Nothing

Amazing location and close to everything. The apartment itself was very spacious with well working air conditioning. The terrace area is also a nice place to relax.

  • Exceptional – Ewelina from Poland – 23 May 2024 (10/10)

    Everything, it was fabolous.

  • Fantastic apartment with helpful host walking distance to everything you need. Would recommend! – Sarah from United Kingdom – 29 May 2023 (8/10)

The location was perfect, walking distance to everything and the apartment had everything we needed. The host was also extremely helpful which made a big difference to our stay.

What could be improved: Was a bit noisy in the mornings but to be expected being so central.

  • Very good – Harriet from United States – 28 September 2022 (8/10)

The location was excellent(once we found it!). It was at the top of a steep, narrow, slick passageway from the city center but was situated right on the wall and very atmospheric. If you book this apartment be sure you are fit. The apartment itself has two floors and there are many steep, narrow stairs to get to the apartment.

What could be improved: We didn’t have good directions to the property when we arrived in Dubrovnik. The emails from the agent—Direct Booker—were very confusing and the address and phone number given weren’t for the property where we were staying. It took much time and energy to even find our place. Thank goodness for a kind woman from another sobe who happened to know our host and was able to help us find our way. However, once we found it, our host was very accommodating.
