Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Maestral on Doktor Vladka Mačeka street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that surprise you without trying too hard.

The thing about this hotel is it sits in Lapad, which – if you’ve never been to Dubrovnik – is actually where a lot of locals hang out instead of the tourist-packed Old Town. I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’ll still want to see the walls and all that, but there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels more… I don’t know, real? The hotel’s about a 15-minute bus ride from the main action, but honestly, after spending days dodging cruise ship crowds, coming back to this quieter pocket of the city felt like a relief. Plus, there’s this decent little beach nearby – Lapad Bay – where you can actually find a spot to sit without elbowing someone’s selfie stick.

What I really appreciated about Maestral was how unpretentious it felt. The lobby’s got that slightly dated but clean Eastern European hotel vibe (think renovated sometime in the 2000s), and the staff actually seems to give a damn about helping you figure out the city. The woman at reception – I think her name was Ana – drew me this little map showing which bus stops to use and where to grab coffee that didn’t cost tourist prices. My room faced the street, which I was initially worried about, but the area’s pretty quiet at night, especially compared to staying near Stradun where you’ve got people wandering around until all hours. The AC worked well too, which honestly matters more than fancy sheets when you’re dealing with those July temperatures.

The breakfast was… well, it’s hotel breakfast, but they had actual local cheese and some decent coffee, not just the instant stuff. And here’s a random detail that probably only matters to people like me who work while traveling – the wifi was surprisingly solid throughout the building. I spent a few mornings answering emails from the small terrace area, and it felt pretty civilized.

What really sold me on the place, though, was the neighborhood itself. You’ve got this tree-lined street that leads down to the water, and there are these little konobas (local restaurants) scattered around where you can get grilled fish without the Old Town markup. There’s one called Orhan that’s maybe a 5-minute walk away – definitely worth finding. And if you’re into that sort of thing, the sunset views from the nearby promenade are honestly better than anything you’ll get from the more expensive hotels closer to the center.

Is Maestral going to blow your mind? Probably not. But for the price point and that 8.2 rating it’s got, it delivers exactly what it promises – a solid, comfortable base in a part of Dubrovnik that still feels like a real place where people actually live. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Reviews

  • Superb – Zifang from China – 18 May 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: I need an invoice for my booking, could you send it for me, thank you very much!

  • Very good – Beatriz from Spain – 7 August 2024 (8/10)

It was a really nice apartment. You are in the Old Town in 10 minutes taking the bus number 6. They were really accommodating with us and everything was new and easy. Would recommend.

What could be improved: The towels smelled a bit like smoke/tobacco and as non-smokers it threw us a bit off…

Also there are no blinds in the living room so if you are more than 2 people have that in mind to bring a sleeping mask 😉

  • Perfect apartment! – Anna from Ukraine – 30 June 2024 (10/10)

The best host ever! Jozo is so attentive and caring. The apartment has everything you need, it was very comfortable for four people. There is a local supermarket nearby, a 15-minute walk to the beach, and 5-7 minutes to the Old Town by taxi or bus. Sincerely recommend.

  • Charming apartment – Rodica from Romania – 27 September 2023 (10/10)

We were very happy for choosing this apartment for our 1 night stay in Dubrovnik ( we were on our way to Korčula), it was easy to find ( with navigation), Jozo, the owner, waited for us outside, he was constantly in contact with us as we were on the road, at arrival helped us park nearby so it was safe but we didn't have to pay for the parking, and it can be sometimes costly in Dubrovnik. Apartment itself is excellent, probably recently renovated and looks as it's just out of the box, great design and a lot of clever facilities in a relatively small space, exquisit bathroom, lots of small nice details everywhere and the owner kindly put some drinks and fruits for us in the fridge and gave us useful info about the grocery nearby and dining in the city. You can walk to Old City if you have time and energy ( we didn't, after over 10 hours drive :), or take the bus or order an Uber ( as we were 3, it was about the same amount for any option, uber from the City gate cost us a little over 6€). We had an excellent stay there and slept very well, the neighborhood is quiet and very green.

  • Appartamento delizioso – Livia from Italy – 25 August 2023 (9/10)

La casa è nuova, con ottime rifiniture, dotata di tutti i comfort in una posizione tranquilla in zona residenziale. Si trova parcheggio gratuito e c è il supermercato molto vicino.

  • Confort total – Lopez from Spain – 27 July 2024 (10/10)

  • Apartamento bien ubicado, pero con fallos importantes. – Covadonga from Spain – 18 July 2024 (6/10)
