You know what’s funny about Dubrovnik? Everyone obsesses over staying inside the Old Town walls, but honestly, some of the best experiences happen when you venture just outside – which is exactly where you’ll find Matušić Guest House. Tucked away on Pod Đurđevom crkvom (yeah, I know, Croatian street names are a mouthful), this little gem sits in a neighborhood that actually feels like people live there, not just tourists passing through.

The location is sort of perfect in that understated way – you’re maybe a 10-minute walk from Pile Gate, close enough that you can easily pop back for a midday break when the Old Town gets stupidly crowded around noon. But here’s the thing: you’re positioned right below St. George’s Church (that’s what Pod Đurđevom crkvom means, by the way), and the whole area has this lovely residential vibe where you’ll hear church bells instead of tour groups at 7 AM. The owners, I mean, they clearly know their stuff – the place has that 9.6 rating for a reason, and after staying there, it makes total sense.

What really got me was the attention to detail that you only notice when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms feel authentically Croatian without being kitschy – think stone walls and wooden shutters, but with proper air conditioning and surprisingly good WiFi. The breakfast spread actually changes based on what’s seasonal and local, not just the same hotel buffet nonsense. And parking – God, parking in Dubrovnik is normally a nightmare – but they’ve got it sorted, which saves you about 20 euros a day and a lot of stress. The family running the place (because it really does feel family-run) knows exactly when to chat and when to let you be, which is rarer than you’d think. During the crazy summer months when the Old Town is basically Disneyland, you can retreat here and remember why you fell in love with Croatia in the first place. I’d honestly stay here again, and I’m pretty picky about these things.

  The host was friendly and helpful. The rooms were stylish and spacious, and the pool was great. The scenery was incredible and it was wonderfully private and secluded and a quick drive to Dubrovnik city. Incredible value for money 10/10

  Incredible views and lovely space! Location is very close to Dubrovnik if you have a car with you (which is essential in my opinion). Vlaho is a very attentive host and responded to any problems quickly and effectively!

  Ein super schönes Haus mit hervorragender Ausstattung. Der Pool ist genial. Man schaut beim Schwimmen in die wunderschöne Natur ringsum. Wir haben die Ruhe nach dem Besuch in Dubrovnik sehr genossen. Trotz abseits gelegen, ist alles mit dem Auto sehr gut erreichbar. Vielen Dank auch dem sehr netten Gastgeber Vlaho.
  Ein Tipp: Geht im fußläufig gelegenen Restaurant Izletiste Koracavo essen. Ihr findet dort ein hervorragendes Menu und super nette Gastgeber.
