Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Old Town Marko? It’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street that most tourists walk right past – Nalješkovićeva ulica – which honestly works in your favor because you’re literally steps from all the main action but without the constant parade of cruise ship crowds. I mean, you can walk to the Rector’s Palace in about three minutes, but when you’re sitting in your room at night, you’re not hearing the street performers and restaurant noise that echoes through the main drags until midnight.

The building itself has that weathered stone charm that actually looks authentic (because it is), not like those places that try too hard to look “medieval.” Your room might be on the smaller side – this is a 3-star spot, after all – but honestly, who’s spending time inside when you’ve got the old city walls right there? What I really appreciated was how the owner, Marko, actually knows the neighborhood. He’ll tell you which bakery opens earliest for coffee (crucial info), or that the little wine bar around the corner stays open later than anywhere else. The check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that overly formal hotel reception desk stuff, just practical advice about getting around and where to grab groceries.

Here’s the thing about staying inside Dubrovnik’s walls: parking is basically impossible, but Marko’s place is accessible enough that you can actually get your luggage there without feeling like you’re on some medieval obstacle course. The stone steps aren’t too brutal, and there’s this tiny courtyard area where you can actually breathe for a second. I’d say the sweet spot for staying here is shoulder season – late spring or early fall – when you can leave your windows open at night to catch the sea breeze without the summer heat that can make these old stone buildings feel like ovens. The 8.8 rating makes total sense to me because it delivers exactly what it promises: clean, comfortable, authentically located, and run by someone who actually cares about the place. It’s not trying to be fancy, but it gets the fundamentals right, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re more interested in exploring one of Europe’s most stunning cities than lounging in a hotel room.

Reviews

  • Superb – Christopher from United States – 22 June 2025 (9/10)

    Dubrovnik is magical.

What could be improved: If a person has any mobility challenges, this apartment would be very difficult. Honestly, that is true for all of old town.

  • Loved the apartment. Got good response from the host. – Jon from United States – 20 June 2025 (8/10)

Location involves many steps which is what gives it authenticity…its on a steep slope. Loved the vibes and the toned leg muscles after 2 days.

What could be improved: Location was accurate but although instructions described 2 green doors, there were actually 3 green doors side by side. Being jet lagged from a red-eye flight, a picture might have proved more helpful for weary travellers. Figured it out eventually after trying to open our neighbor's door lockbox. Wording to the effect of "you will see Apt #21 and 3 green doors. Yours is the first door on the left or the 2nd door in the middle, etc. might prove easier. Also, I'd offer directions such as " Using the Pile Gate means you walk up many, many steep steps. Using he Buza Gate allows you to walk down to your apartment #21. Pass through the Buza gate and take a right hand turn to Peline Street that runs alongside the inside the wall to the 6th? street on your left (Naljeskoviceva ulica ). Walk down.

  • Dubrovnik the city of steps – Zeci-ann from United Kingdom – 24 May 2025 (10/10)

Everything apart from shower as the entire bathroom floor did get quite wet , we just left a rolled up towel down to help in the end

What could be improved: Nothing it was fabulous

  • Very clear communication with the host. Best way to arrive with your luggage and exhaustion from your travels! – Shawna from United States – 12 May 2025 (9/10)

Very well located from Buza Gate. Less steps with luggage.

    What could be improved: Nothing!

  • Overall good for couples – Kai from United Kingdom – 10 May 2025 (9/10)

The property had self check in and it was perfect for us as after our flight arrived at 1am! Apartment had everything we need and is good for two people. Supermarket 2 mins away and pretty much central of old town. Had good AC and shower was hot!

What could be improved: Bathroom sometimes flood abit especially using the shower head but other than that. The location of the property has a lot of stairs to central of old town which older people might have problems

  • Very quaint in idyllic setting. – Ruta from Ireland – 30 April 2025 (10/10)

Very central and gorgeous surroundings inside and outside. Quiet street.

  • A very cosy, well decorated and clean room in a perfect location. Nice and quiet. – Mcholm from United Kingdom – 8 October 2024 (10/10)

Loved the location; the bed was very comfy; the sweet touches like tea and coffee left for us, bathroom very nice.

What could be improved: The only negative was that the shower overflows and could do with a strip at the edge to keep the water in, but this wasn't too big a deal.

  • Nice and quiet place in old town – Julius from Germany – 6 September 2024 (9/10)

    – very nice location in Old Town with very green and quiet alley
    – well equipped, nice and spacious bathroom

What could be improved: – difficult to air the flat due to lack of windows
    – lots of stairs to reach the flat

  • Perfect little studio! – Alexandra from United States – 2 September 2024 (10/10)

The entire place was spotless and extremely clean and renovated. Host did a great job of communicating and was flexible to let us check in early. I would say the location was ideal considering the challenges of Old Town (stairs, etc). We came in through Buza Gate and didn’t face too many uphill stairs compared to if we would have stayed in the center. The studio is also located along a very quiet path so no noise issues.

What could be improved: No fault to the host but the studio can be a tight squeeze for two people if you are used to a larger space. Bathroom was a great size though! Stairs will be a challenge in most of Old Town, so be warned this spot will still require some uphill/downhill stairs. However, I do feel it is an easier location to access with luggage from Buza Gate. There is a long staircase you will have to ascend each time you go closer to the center.

  • Lovely, clean apartment in the old town. – Tony from Australia – 31 August 2024 (9/10)

Great bathroom, comfortable bed, bottle of wine was a nice touch. Communication was terrific.

What could be improved: Stairs were not fun – but that’s the price you pay for staying in Dubrovnik. Approach from the Buza Gate for an easier way to get to the apartment.
