Hotel Description
You know what hits you first when you walk into Old Writer Apartment? The stone walls – they’re not just decorative, they’re actually part of Dubrovnik’s medieval fortifications, and you can feel centuries of history in those cool, uneven surfaces. The place sits right on Ulica od Sigurate, which honestly sounds more intimidating than it is – it just means “Security Street,” probably because it’s tucked safely inside the Old Town walls where the city guards used to patrol.
The apartment itself feels like someone’s cultured Croatian grandmother decided to rent out her place (in the best possible way). The furnishings are a mix of antique-ish pieces and modern necessities, nothing too fancy but everything works. What I love is how the morning light filters through those traditional shutters – you’ll want to keep them cracked open because the street below comes alive with locals heading to work around 7 AM, and there’s something magical about hearing Croatian conversations echo off the stone walls. The bathroom’s compact but well-designed, and they’ve actually managed to fit a decent shower in there, which isn’t always a given in these historic conversions.
Location-wise, you’re literally in the heart of everything – I mean, you can stumble to Stradun (the main drag) in about two minutes, but you’re just far enough off it to avoid the cruise ship crowds during peak hours. The apartment is maybe a three-minute walk from Onofrio’s Fountain, where locals still fill up water bottles, and you’re practically neighbors with some of the best konobas (taverns) in the city. Parking is… well, it’s Dubrovnik Old Town, so forget about parking nearby. You’ll need to use the public lots outside the walls, but honestly, once you’re settled in here, you won’t want to leave anyway. The evening atmosphere is incredible – after the day-trippers head back to their ships, the narrow streets transform into this intimate, lamp-lit maze where you can actually hear your footsteps on the polished limestone.
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel authentic without being uncomfortable. You’re sleeping in a space that’s genuinely historic (the building dates back several centuries), but you’ve got reliable WiFi and a kitchen that’s actually functional for making morning coffee or heating up leftovers from dinner. The host clearly knows the area well – they left detailed notes about which bakery opens earliest (important for getting fresh burek before it sells out) and which streets get the best evening light for photos. Fair warning though: the stone walls keep things cool, which is perfect in summer but you might want to pack a light sweater for spring or fall visits. Also, if you’re not used to narrow European streets, the sound carries differently here – it’s not loud, just… present. Part of the Old Town experience, really.
