Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Royal Palm Hotel on Kardinala Stepinca – I mean, it’s not exactly in the heart of Old Town, you know? But here’s the thing about this place: sometimes being a little removed from the tourist chaos is exactly what you need, especially in Dubrovnik where the crowds can be absolutely insane during summer months.

The hotel itself has this understated elegance that I really appreciated. It’s not trying too hard to be flashy or over-the-top Croatian themed (thank god), but there’s definitely a Mediterranean sophistication to it. The lobby smells like that perfect mix of sea air and expensive cleaning products – sounds weird, but it works. Check-in was smooth, which honestly surprised me because I’ve had some nightmare experiences at other high-end places in the city. The staff actually seemed to know the area well, not just the scripted tourist spots. One guy at the front desk told me about this little bakery about ten minutes away that locals hit up for morning coffee – turned out to be one of my favorite discoveries of the trip.

What really sold me on this place was the attention to detail without being stuffy about it. The rooms are spacious (a rarity in Dubrovnik, trust me), and the beds are legitimately comfortable – not just hotel-comfortable, but like, you’ll actually sleep well comfortable. The bathrooms have those rainfall showerheads that don’t suck, which is apparently harder to find than you’d think. There’s this great terrace area where you can see glimpses of the Adriatic, and it’s quiet enough that you can actually have a conversation without shouting over crowds or street noise. I spent a good chunk of my evenings there with a glass of wine, just decompressing after walking around the city walls all day.

The location is actually perfect if you think about it strategically. You’re about a 15-minute walk to Pile Gate, which means you can easily get into Old Town but you’re not dealing with the constant stream of cruise ship passengers walking past your window. There’s decent parking nearby too – and if you’re driving in Croatia, you’ll understand why that matters. The area around Kardinala Stepinca is pretty residential, so you get a feel for how people actually live in Dubrovnik, not just the postcard version. Plus, there are some solid restaurants within walking distance that aren’t charging tourist prices for mediocre food.

Look, I’ve stayed at my share of hotels in Croatia, and the Royal Palm gets the balance right. It’s polished enough that you feel like you’re treating yourself, but it doesn’t have that sterile luxury hotel vibe that can make you feel like you’re in a bubble. The 8.9 rating makes sense – it’s not perfect (the WiFi could be stronger, and room service is a bit slow), but it’s the kind of place where the good stuff significantly outweighs any minor complaints. If you’re looking for a base in Dubrovnik where you can actually relax between sightseeing sessions, this is a solid choice.
