Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of places around Dubrovnik, but The Fairy’s Cave in Komolac really caught me off guard – and honestly, that name had me rolling my eyes at first. I mean, come on, right? But the thing is, once you’re actually there, it sort of makes sense. The whole place has this almost mystical quality, especially in the morning when the mist rolls off the Dubrovnik River (yeah, there’s actually a river most tourists never see).

Komolac itself is this quiet village that’s maybe 20 minutes from Old Town – close enough that you’re not stuck in the middle of nowhere, but far enough that you escape the cruise ship crowds completely. The address puts you right in the heart of the village, and I actually loved walking down to the little harbor area in the evenings. There’s this family-run konoba about five minutes away where the fish is so fresh it’s practically still swimming, and the locals there treated me like I’d been coming for years. The hotel staff – who seem to know everyone in town – pointed me there on my first night, which tells you something about how they operate.

What really gets me about this place is the attention to detail that you just don’t expect from a four-star property. The rooms have this perfect balance of traditional Croatian elements without feeling like a folklore museum, you know? Stone walls that actually keep things cool during those brutal August afternoons, and the beds – honestly, I slept better there than I have in five-star places in Zagreb. The bathrooms are properly modern (thank god, because I’ve been burned by “charming” old properties before), and they’ve got this rainfall shower situation that’s actually functional, not just for show.

The breakfast deserves its own paragraph because it’s not your typical hotel buffet disaster. They do this thing where everything’s local – I’m talking about cheese from farms you can literally see from the terrace, honey that tastes like wildflowers, and bread that’s still warm. The woman who runs the kitchen (I think her name was Marija?) makes this incredible fig jam that I’m still thinking about months later. She actually gave me the recipe, though I’ll probably never manage to recreate it properly.

Here’s the thing about the location that took me a while to appreciate – you’re positioned perfectly for exploring the stuff tourists miss. The Franjo Tuđman Bridge is right there, which sounds boring but the views at sunset are absolutely mental. Plus, you can actually park here without selling a kidney, unlike anywhere near the old city walls. The 35 bus runs regularly into town, but honestly, the walk along the coast road is gorgeous if you’ve got an hour to spare.

I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t party central, and if you need to stumble back from Buža Bar at 2 AM, you’re looking at a taxi ride. But if you want to experience Dubrovnik like someone who actually lives there, rather than just Instagram-ing the same spots as everyone else, The Fairy’s Cave gets it completely right. It’s that rare place where the 10 rating actually makes sense once you’ve been there.

I can't think of anything that wasn't already available, and if there was something you needed that wasn't there, the staff was more than happy to help. Everything is very comfortable, the room was clean, the kitchen is spacious and ready to use, the bathroom has several towels, toiletries, shampoos, even a hairdryer and a washing machine ready for guests. I can't even describe in words how satisfied I was, they exceeded all my expectations!

The property was very nice, clean, close to a bus stop and the owner was incredibly helpful. My first day was on my birthday and she even got me a card and gift which was an amazing touch. There is a washing machine, microwave, information about Dubrovnik which the owner has very handily printed out in information booklets. So basically everything was covered. Me and my girlfriend were very happy with our stay and couldn't ask for much better.
