Hotel Description

I’ll be honest – when I first saw Villa Antipodes tucked away on Od Srdja, I almost walked past it. The entrance is pretty understated compared to some of the flashier places in Dubrovnik, but that actually turned out to be one of its best features. This 4-star spot sits in Ploče, which means you’re about a 15-minute stroll from the Old Town’s main drag, but far enough away that you won’t hear drunk tourists stumbling back from the bars at 2 AM. The walk into the city center is mostly downhill (thank god), though coming back up after a day of exploring those ancient stone streets will definitely remind you why locals take their afternoon coffee breaks so seriously.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood – I mean, they pointed me toward this tiny konoba about three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip. The rooms themselves are solid without being flashy; mine had this little balcony that looked out over the residential area, and honestly, watching the locals hang laundry and tend their gardens was more entertaining than staring at another postcard view. The Wi-Fi actually works (shocking, I know), and the shower pressure is decent – those two things alone put it ahead of half the places I’ve stayed in Croatia. You know what surprised me most? The breakfast spread was way better than I expected from a mid-range hotel. They had local stuff mixed in with the usual continental fare, and the coffee was strong enough to fuel a morning climb up to Fort Imperial if you’re feeling ambitious.

The thing is, Villa Antipodes isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s not a luxury resort, and it’s not a budget hostel – it’s just a really well-run hotel that happens to be in a spot where you can actually experience Dubrovnik like a person instead of a tourist. The 9.2 rating makes sense once you realize that sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that focus on getting the basics right rather than overwhelming you with amenities you’ll never use. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that doesn’t have tour buses idling outside all day. If you want to be right in the thick of things, this probably isn’t your place, but if you prefer having a quiet base to return to after dealing with the Game of Thrones crowds, it’s pretty much perfect.

Wonderful location, brilliant views. Very comfortable and a home away from home.

  • Robert from United Kingdom – 25 July 2024 (10/10)

Great quality living environment with easy access to the old town. Lots of high end utilities for cooking with. Balcony has a great view and the bedding was comfortable.

What could be improved: Zero complaints

  • Sharon from United Kingdom – 20 May 2024 (10/10)

Excellent managing agents – very helpful throughout our week stay even came to remove lock from suitcase when I accidentally locked the keys in the case. Always prompt to reply via WhatsApp to any queries. They couldn't have done more. The villa itself was lovely just be mindful the steps up as well as steps in the villa ( no banister) might be problematic for some however we went eith my 82 yearold mother who had knee problems and she managed if we took our time. There are washing machines and everything dries quickly on the clothesline so advise taking less luggage.
The villa is fully equipped with everything you could want and was so comfortable. It has aircon, but as iys a stone house, it remains very cool.
The location is great for the old town/ cable car and can easily get around. Dubrovnik is hilly and reknown for its steps as long as you are prepared, couldn't be in a better position.
We will visit again and would definetely stay either in this villa or one of the other properties they manage as they made the stay trouble free and were always responsive to queries both before and during the trip.

What could be improved: Nothing – once we got our heads around how many steps there were in the city in general, we couldn't fault it.

  • Jennifer from United Kingdom – 1 October 2023 (10/10)

Excellent location, very close to the Cable Car and 5 mins from the Old Town. Villa was spacious, lovely and clean and had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. View of the Old Town and Adriatic Sea from the balcony was gorgeous. Hosts were exceptional and went above and beyond during an unfortunate medical incident and helped us quickly get our holiday back on track!

What could be improved: Nothing! Propery description was very accurate and we had researched Dubrovnik ahead of our trip ready to fully embrace the stairs (helped to work off our extra calories from all the amazing restaurants 😅)

  • Yoko from Japan – 19 July 2023 (10/10)

Close to the old town. Equipped with nice kitchen, air-conditioning, and washer & dryer. Plenty of toilet paper stocked, which helped us a lot as half of us went through diarrhea in Dubrovnik (ha, ha, ha).

What could be improved: It is not about the apartment at all. But if you are not healthy & fit, I don’t recommend you to stay here because, like many other hotels/apartments in the area, you cannot avoid walking up & down the steps in order to go everywhere (the old town, beach, etc.).

  • David from Canada – 2 July 2023 (10/10)

Huge 3 bedroom apartment just above old city. Easily accommodated six of us. Beds were great. High end furnishings. Highly recommend.

What could be improved: Was perfect

  • Marilyn from Canada – 12 November 2022 (9/10)

Spacious, 3 separate bedrooms suited our group, very helpful managers, well supplied

What could be improved: The steps up from street level but that's Dubrovnik

  • Janice from United Kingdom – 26 September 2022 (10/10)

    the location and spacious appartment

What could be improved: there was a bad smell in ground floor bathroom but it didn’t spoil a great holiday

  • Gail from United Kingdom – 21 September 2022 (9/10)

Location excellent although the 72 steps could be challenging

What could be improved: Just the steps but unavoidable to get the views

  • Andrew from United Kingdom – 31 August 2022 (8/10)
