You know what really struck me about Apartment Anita Gru?
You know what really struck me about Apartment Anita Gru? The moment I stepped onto that balcony, I actually forgot I was staying in an apartment and not some boutique hotel. I mean, Dubrovnik’s old town spreads out below you like something from a postcard, but without that touristy feel you get from the big chain places right in the thick of things.
The apartment itself is honestly better than most hotel rooms I’ve crashed in around Croatia. The bedroom’s got this solid, lived-in quality – not fancy-fancy, but genuinely comfortable with decent linens and blackout curtains that actually work (trust me, you’ll appreciate this when those church bells start ringing at dawn). The whole place feels like someone’s well-loved home rather than a sterile rental, which I sort of love. There’s a proper kitchen too, and honestly, after eating out for days in Dubrovnik’s restaurants – which are amazing but pricey – being able to grab some local cheese and wine from the morning market near Gundulić Square and just chill on the balcony was perfect. The Wi-Fi’s solid if you need to work, and the shower pressure’s actually decent, which… well, anyone who’s traveled through the Balkans knows that’s not always a given.
What really makes this place special though is the location – it’s close enough that you can easily walk to Stradun and all the main sights, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the cruise ship crowds stumbling past your window at all hours. I could hear the sea in the distance on quiet evenings, and the neighborhood has this authentic feel where you’ll see locals doing their daily shopping instead of just tourists taking selfies. Parking can be a bit tricky around here (like everywhere in Dubrovnik, honestly), but Anita was super helpful with directions to the nearest spots. The building itself is typically Croatian – stone walls, narrow stairs, lots of character – so maybe not ideal if you’re traveling with heavy luggage or mobility issues, but it adds to the charm. I’d definitely come back, especially during shoulder season when Dubrovnik’s still gorgeous but not completely overrun. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re actually living in the city for a few days, not just passing through.
