Apartment Ivo & Mare

You know what caught me off guard about Apartment Ivo & Mare? It’s tucked away on Od Batale in Lapad, and honestly, I almost walked right past it the first time – but that’s actually part of its charm. The whole area feels like you’re staying in an actual Croatian neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble, which I really appreciated after spending a few days dodging cruise ship crowds in the Old Town.

The apartments themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d hope for from a family-run place. Everything’s clean and functional without being fancy, and Mare (I’m assuming she’s the Mare from the name) was genuinely helpful with local tips – she told me about this little bakery around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’re there; it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just solid accommodation that gets the basics right. I mean, the WiFi actually worked consistently, the shower had proper pressure, and the little kitchenette was perfect for making coffee in the morning without having to venture out immediately.

What really sold me on the location was how easy it was to get around. Lapad peninsula is this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to Lapad Bay for a swim (maybe 10 minutes), but far enough from the main tourist drag that you can actually get some sleep at night. The bus into Dubrovnik’s Old Town runs pretty regularly, and parking – if you’re driving – isn’t the nightmare it is closer to the city walls. I actually enjoyed the evening walks back from dinner, especially in late spring when the whole area smells like jasmine and you can hear families chatting on their balconies. It reminded me why I love staying in places where real people actually live, rather than those sterile hotel districts that could be anywhere in the world.
