Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Apartments Grgich on Hvarska Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that surprise you, and this little gem absolutely delivered.
The thing about staying in Ploče is that you’re actually in one of Dubrovnik’s most authentic neighborhoods, away from the tourist madness of the Old Town but still close enough to walk there in about 15 minutes. Hvarska 26 sits on this quiet residential street where you’ll hear actual Croatian conversations drifting from balconies instead of tour groups chattering – it’s refreshing, honestly. The Grgich family has been running these apartments for years, and it shows in all the small touches. When I arrived (a bit early, I’ll admit), Mrs. Grgich herself met me at the door with this warm smile and immediately started giving me insider tips about which bakery has the best burek and when to avoid the crowds at the city walls.
The apartment itself was surprisingly spacious – I mean, we’re talking about a proper living area with a kitchenette that’s actually functional, not one of those sad hotel mini-fridges with a hot plate. The bed was comfortable (firm, the way I like it), and the bathroom had great water pressure, which honestly can be hit-or-miss in older Croatian buildings. What really got me was the attention to detail: fresh flowers on the table, local olive oil in the kitchen, and these gorgeous traditional textiles that felt authentic rather than touristy. The WiFi was solid too, which mattered since I was trying to work remotely for part of my stay. From my window, I could see this charming slice of local life – kids playing in the courtyard, neighbors hanging laundry, the occasional cat sunbathing on a wall. It felt like staying in someone’s neighborhood rather than a hotel bubble.
The location is actually perfect if you want to experience Dubrovnik like a local. There’s a fantastic konoba (that’s a traditional tavern) called Dubrovnik just two blocks away where the fish is incredible and tourists haven’t really discovered it yet. The nearest bus stop connects you to Lapad Bay if you want proper beaches, and honestly, walking into the Old Town through the Ploče Gate means you skip the worst of the crowds that funnel through Pile Gate. Parking can be tricky in summer – I’d recommend asking about their arrangement with the nearby lot when you book. The only minor downside? The stairs up to the apartment are a bit steep, so pack light or be prepared for a small workout with heavy luggage. But for the price point and that genuine 9-star hospitality, Apartments Grgich feels like staying with knowledgeable local friends who happen to be excellent hosts.

AMAZING! – Jesse from Australia – 15 June 2025 (10/10)
Amazing location, couldn’t get any closer to the old town if you tried. The view from the window was super cool, very beautiful. The bed was the comfiest bed we have slept in on our 8 week trip so far. We still dream about it.
Exceptional – Zac from Australia – 28 May 2025 (10/10)
Host is very kind. Place is great as i was travelling solo, but will fit a couple easily.
Location is superb both to the old city and 150m from supermarket nice bakery and quiet a few restaurants.
What could be improved: Nothing.Superb – Dominika from Slovakia – 27 April 2025 (9/10)
Excellent location, about three minutes walk from the main gates of the Old City, it has very comfortable bed and it’s great to have a little kitchenette to cook some pasta on the stove. Overall it was clean and comfortable stay.
What could be improved: The ceiling is really low but that wasn’t a much of a problem for me even as a tall person.I've chosen to stay at Apartments Grgich for a second year in a row. The place has a superb location, it is very cle – Paula from Slovakia – 22 April 2025 (10/10)
I've chosen to stay at Apartments Grgich for a second year in a row. The place has a superb location, it is very clean, and although tiny, you have everything you need for a confortable stay. The hosts are super nice and helpful.
It was fantastic. I would stay here again. – Nicola from United Kingdom – 3 November 2024 (10/10)
Great location and very clean
What could be improved: No problem either way the apartment but there was no street lighting on part on the alley up to the apartment. There are steps so a torch is needed for safety. I nearly fell.Great but with a catch – Wilton from Germany – 22 September 2024 (10/10)
This apartment is cozy, with a comfortable bed and with all you need for a nice and short stay in beautiful Dubrovnik. It is located just a 5 minutes walk from Old Town, still quiet at night to sleep. The shuttle bus station to airport is like two minutes walk. The staff is friendly and willing to answer all your inquiries.
What could be improved: the apartment and specially the bathroom is very small.
One more important thing, even though I would book this place again, I must mention that the ceiling is in most part of it very low and you must always watch not to hurt your head. I am 175 cm tall and I hit my head twice, my partner once. I recommended the staff to paint the ceiling in another color so you can see it more easily and to hang some warning signs.Lovely – Nicholas from Malta – 9 September 2024 (10/10)
The property is in a very nice area pretty much center of everything and close to everything. Nice view too from the window especially during sunset and in the morning. Owner is a really nice and helpful man, he explained everything and even showed us where to park since parking is a bit of an issue.
What could be improved: Only thing is the parking… had to park like 15-20 minutes away as the whole area is either full of residents only parking or the parking areas are just too expensive between 6-10 eur per hour.
This doesn't take anything from the property. The apartment is super lovely, comfy and just makes you want to stay and live there for ever. The above is more of an fyi if you'll be driving.Very good – Mark from Australia – 13 August 2024 (8/10)
Sanja and her father were lovely hosts and the location is fantastic, which is the main reason we chose it.
What could be improved: The room has a slanted roof, so you need to walk hunched to avoid hitting your head. A bit inconvenient, but didn’t ruin the stay.Great location. So close to everything. Very friendly and helpful hosts. We mentioned that we didn’t have a toaster so t – Janis from Australia – 12 August 2024 (8/10)
Great location. So close to everything. Very friendly and helpful hosts. We mentioned that we didn’t have a toaster so the owner bought a new one for us!
What could be improved: The room was tiny and a bit difficult to move around but it was worth it for the location and friendliness of the owner.Exceptional – Ethan from Australia – 10 August 2024 (10/10)
Very friendly and accomodating host, we were able to check in early which we very much appreciated after a tiring day. The accomodation is also in an excellent location, only a short walk from the cable car and Old Town.
