I was expecting another generic apartment rental, but this place actually feels like someone’s carefully curated home that they happen to let travelers stay in. It’s tucked away on Biokovska Street – and I mean properly tucked away, not just marketing-speak hidden – about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town walls. That walk, by the way, is mostly uphill on the way back (fair warning), but honestly, after spending days weaving through cruise ship crowds, I was grateful for the breathing room.

The apartments themselves have this lived-in warmth that’s hard to fake. The owner, who I’m pretty sure is actually named Pojko, has this knack for small touches that matter – like decent coffee in the kitchen (not those sad instant packets), proper blackout curtains that actually block the morning sun, and surprisingly good water pressure. I stayed during late September, and while you could hear the occasional scooter buzzing up the street, it was refreshingly quiet compared to the chaos down by Stradun. The balcony view isn’t going to win any Instagram contests, but you get glimpses of terracotta rooftops and, if you crane your neck just right, a sliver of the Adriatic. What I loved most was having actual counter space to spread out groceries from the morning market – something you definitely don’t get in those cramped Old Town hotels.

Here’s the thing about the location that guidebooks won’t tell you: yes, it’s a bit of a hike to the main sights, but you’re literally around the corner from where locals actually live and shop. There’s this little bakery about three minutes away that opens at 6 AM and sells the best burek I had in Croatia (the cheese one, trust me). The 4-star rating seems about right – it’s not luxury, but everything works properly, the WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and the beds are actually comfortable, not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you feeling like you’ve been sleeping on cobblestones. I mean, after walking the city walls in August heat, that air conditioning was basically a religious experience. The 8.8 rating makes total sense too – it’s the kind of place where small details are done right, from the way they handle key pickup to having actual hangers in the closet instead of those weird attached hotel ones. If you’re looking for a pool and room service, keep looking. But if you want to feel like you’re staying in Dubrovnik rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.
