Hotel Description

You know what hit me first about Guest House Forty-Four? The address actually means something here – Ulica Miha Pracata is one of those narrow stone streets where you can practically touch both walls if you stretch your arms out. I mean, we’re talking proper Old Town Dubrovnik, not some tourist trap on the outskirts calling itself “historic.” When you’re this close to the Stradun (that’s the main drag everyone walks down), you’ll hear the morning delivery trucks around 7 AM, but honestly, it’s kind of charming – like the city’s waking up around you.

The place itself feels like someone’s stylish Croatian aunt decided to open a guesthouse and actually knew what she was doing. The stone walls aren’t just for show – they keep things cool even when it’s blazing outside in July, which, if you’ve been to Dubrovnik in summer, you’ll appreciate. What I really loved was how they’ve managed to squeeze modern comfort into a building that’s probably older than most countries. The WiFi actually works (crucial when you’re trying to make dinner reservations), and the bathroom has proper water pressure – not always a given in these medieval buildings, trust me.

Here’s the thing about staying right in Old Town – you’re literally living inside a UNESCO World Heritage site, which sounds fancy until you realize it means dragging your luggage up ancient stone steps. But Guest House Forty-Four gets this. Check-in was smooth, and they seem to understand that after a long travel day, you don’t want to hunt around narrow alleys looking for your accommodation. The location means you can stumble back from a late dinner at one of the family-run konobas (that’s local speak for traditional restaurants) without navigating the maze of similar-looking stone passages that can trip up even GPS.

The 9.7 rating isn’t just people being generous – it’s earned. There’s this attention to detail that you notice after staying in a bunch of hotels. Clean towels that actually smell fresh, not like industrial detergent. Windows that open properly so you can hear the church bells from St. Blaise (they chime every hour, which is either romantic or annoying depending on your jet lag situation). The kind of place where if you ask about the best bakery for morning pastries, they’ll point you toward the one locals actually use, not the touristy spot with English signs.

Look, Dubrovnik’s expensive and crowded, especially if you’re visiting between May and September. But staying somewhere like this – where you’re part of the rhythm of the old city rather than just passing through – makes the whole experience feel less like checking locations off a list and more like you’re actually somewhere special. Plus, when cruise ship crowds descend around 10 AM, you can retreat upstairs and watch the chaos from your window with a coffee, which feels wonderfully civilized.

Perfect location and outstanding staff. This is a small boutique hotel in the heart of the old walled city. The staff will go above and beyond your expectations – couldn’t recommend more highly!

What could be improved: Some nearby bar noise on one of our nights – but no fault of guesthouse 44

  • David from United Kingdom – 18 April 2025 (10/10)

Fantastic location, lovely room with a massive comfy bed.
Right in the heart of the old town so really easy to pop in and out between visits to the sights. The owner and his staff were brilliant and friendly. I couldn't have hoped for more. Breakfast was great and the food in the restaurant was excellent.

What could be improved: The coffee was a bit cold one morning:-😃

This family run hotel and restaurant is close to the old town high street on a side road. Most of Dubrovnik is up steep stairs but I was so happy to stay on flat ground.
The rooms are beautifully decorated, with flowers on a side table, good lighting, and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable with soft pillows and crisp linens. Lovely soaps and creams. Breakfast is taken in the restaurant. It's not a buffet but you can order eggs a la carte, choice of juices and hot drinks and a plate of fruit and fresh bread and preserves. All prepared with care. Attention to detail goes for everything.

What could be improved: I had issues with the wifi connection which I found very slow but my son did not have the same issue and it may have been linked to my phone.

I had the best time in Dubrovnik, in part, because everyone at Guest-House Forty-Four greeted me from the moment I arrived and throughout my stay. I felt like a member of the family. Travelling alone for the first time was no problem because of everyone at the Guest-House. The manager/owner greeted me personally and showed me where the property was located. The location was top-notch. I cannot wait to return with my husband. The trip was so memorable — what a magical and surreal little city. Kudos to everyone working there — I felt lucky to stay at this hotel. I ate dinner both nights at the hotel — superb. Thank you everyone! Cheers, Leigh-Anne from Los Angeles

What could be improved: Nothing to report
