But Nije Preša Apartments on Nalješkovićeva Street – well, this one actually gets it right. The building itself has this weathered Dalmatian stone facade that blends perfectly with the medieval architecture around it, and when you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm that’s hard to find in the busier parts of the old city. The apartments are what I’d call “thoughtfully renovated” – they’ve kept the original stone walls and beamed ceilings but added modern touches that actually make sense, like proper lighting and surprisingly good Wi-Fi (trust me, that’s not a given in these old buildings).

What really won me over was the location – and I mean the actual, practical location, not just “historic Old Town” nonsense. You’re tucked away on a quiet residential street that locals actually use, which means you’ll hear church bells in the morning instead of tour groups shuffling past your window at 7 AM. It’s maybe a three-minute walk to Stradun, but you feel completely removed from the chaos. The woman who manages the place – I think her name was Marija – met us right at the door with keys and this genuine enthusiasm about the neighborhood that you just can’t fake. She pointed out the little bakery around the corner where locals grab their morning coffee (€1.50 versus €4 on the main drag), and mentioned that the fruit vendor on Gunduličeva market gives better prices if you speak a few words of Croatian.

The apartment itself was spotless, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places miss this mark. The kitchen actually had proper knives and decent pots – small detail, but it matters if you’re planning to cook anything beyond instant noodles. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent water pressure. At night, the stone walls keep things cool naturally, though there’s AC if you need it during those brutal July heat waves. I mean, the whole experience felt less like staying in a rental and more like borrowing a friend’s place – if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and lived in a 500-year-old building. The 9.6 rating honestly makes sense once you’re there, because it’s one of those places where every detail has been considered without feeling overthought. You’ll pay a bit more than some of the cramped guesthouses closer to the port, but after a long day of dodging cruise ship crowds, you’ll be grateful for the quiet street and the feeling that you’re staying somewhere real.
