River Apartment

You know what struck me first about River Apartment? The name’s actually perfect – you can hear the gentle sound of water from the windows, and honestly, it feels more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed flat than a typical hotel room. It’s tucked away on Ulica Riječka, which I have to say is one of those streets that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the cruise ship crowds haven’t found yet. The building itself has that solid Croatian stone construction you see all over Dubrovnik, and climbing up to the first floor (that’s the second floor for us Americans), you get this anticipation building because the entrance is so understated.

The apartment itself is… well, it’s sort of what you’d hope a Croatian friend’s place would look like if they had impeccable taste and actually kept things organized. Everything feels intentional but not stuffy – the kind of space where you can spread out your guidebooks on the dining table and actually feel settled. The kitchen’s properly equipped, which matters more than you’d think when you’re staying somewhere for more than a night or two. I mean, having decent coffee in the morning without hunting down a café (though there’s a lovely one just down toward the harbor) makes such a difference. The bathroom’s modern without being sterile, and the shower pressure is honestly better than what I have at home. What really got me was the attention to small things – proper hangers, enough outlets where you need them, windows that actually open wide enough to let in that Mediterranean air.

The location’s the real winner though. You’re close enough to the Old Town that you can walk there easily – maybe fifteen minutes at a leisurely pace – but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the chaos of crowds and restaurant hawkers every time you step outside. There’s this residential feel to the neighborhood where you’ll see locals going about their day, kids playing in the small squares, that sort of thing. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving (honestly, most of Dubrovnik is), but the host actually knows the area well enough to give you real advice, not just generic directions. The whole experience feels personal in a way that’s getting harder to find these days. Sure, it’s not going to have a concierge desk or room service, but when everything’s this thoughtfully put together and you’re staying somewhere that actually feels connected to the city rather than isolated from it, those hotel amenities seem pretty unnecessary anyway.
