The Experience

Royal Neptun Hotel

Look, I'll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Royal Neptun on Kardinala Stepinca, I wasn't expecting much.

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Royal Neptun on Kardinala Stepinca, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town walls, which means you’re far enough away from the cruise ship chaos but close enough that you’re not stuck taking buses everywhere. The building itself has this sort of understated elegance that grows on you – nothing flashy, just solid and well-maintained in that way that makes you think “okay, these people actually care about their place.”

What really won me over was the staff, honestly. Check-in was smooth (they actually remembered my name throughout the stay, which is rarer than it should be), and the front desk guy gave me this detailed rundown of the best times to visit the city walls – turns out 8 AM is perfect if you want decent photos without fighting through crowds. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent bathroom with good water pressure. Nothing revolutionary, but everything works properly, you know? The air conditioning actually cools the room down, the WiFi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, and the blackout curtains are thick enough that you can sleep in if you want. I mean, after walking around Dubrovnik’s stone streets all day, that’s really all you need.

The location is actually pretty smart when you think about it. You’re on the main road that connects to the Pile Gate area, so getting around is straightforward, but you’re positioned just right to avoid the worst of the summer tourist madness. There’s a decent restaurant called Taverna Rustica about three blocks away that locals actually eat at (always a good sign), and if you walk down toward the water, you hit some quieter spots where you can grab coffee without paying Old Town prices. The hotel’s breakfast is solid – not mind-blowing, but they have local cheeses and decent coffee, plus fresh fruit that’s actually fresh. Parking can be a bit tricky during peak season, but the hotel has arrangements with a nearby lot, and the staff will walk you through it without making you feel like an idiot for asking. What impressed me most was how the place feels during different times of day – mornings are quiet and efficient, evenings have this relaxed vibe where you can actually have a conversation in the lobby without shouting. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the management has figured out how to run a hotel properly, which sounds basic but trust me, it’s not as common as you’d hope.

Location, spotlessly clean spacious rooms and area throughout the Royal Hotels, excellent variety of food at breakfast. Guest relations dealt with all queries before our arrival date.
The spa and wellness area were excellent and accommodating and spotlessly clean throughout.

Would 100% reccomend to all friends and family to go here over anywhere else in dubrovnik. Stayed mid may and was lovely and quiet. Spacious room, l'occitane toiletries, beautiful sea view. Hotel will set up sun lounger for you on rocky edge along the coast and you can go in the sea. Breakfast was brilliant, even sparkling wine on offer. Fantastic location- right next to bus stop, number 6 bus every 10 mins, €2.50 a ticket and 15 mins into old town. Would reccommend staying here in Babin Kuk area rather than old town so you can get best of both worlds. You're also a 25 min but beautiful walk into lapad where there are many restaurants more affordable than those hotel has to offer (and small supermarkets). Must view sunset from rooftop bar!!

What could be improved: Room had two single beds pushed together when we requested a double. Only got told there was a chance we wouldn't get a double after booking (with no cancellation policy.

Croissants at breakfast were not great and all were filled with either jam or chocolate

The room was very spacious and had an amazing view! Also was extremely clean!

What could be improved: Some of the staff were very friendly others were not as welcoming or helpful. However we did have problems with our shower drain being stuck on numerous occasions and maintenance took a long time to resolve this repeat problem.

Since the Neptun hotel was closed, we were accommodated at the Palm hotel.
Some of the staff were very friendly, such as the receptionist Paola, the chef Jasser, and the waiter Vide, but some of them were not at the level of five-star hotel.

What could be improved: On Sunday, the first day of our stay, we were woken up by a fire alarm at half past six in the morning. It was only cancelled when we were already dressed and almost had left the room. Unfortunately, the alarm also triggered a migraine attack for me that lasted the whole day. Despite all the inconvenience, it would have been completely sufficient and correct from the hotel to leave a written apology and perhaps a chocolate in the rooms of the guests who had been the victims of the unwanted Sunday wake-up call. As we later found out, the false alarm was triggered by one of the guests.
Since the hotel did not even apologize for two days, we complained about the unpleasant incident in writing to the hotel via Booking.com. In response, we were invited to arrange a meeting with the reception manager at the reception, which we refused, as we did not want to waste our vacation on a meeting. The next day, when we returned from the trip around 6 pm, we received a letter with a massage voucher, which could be used only the same day. 🙈 Of course we didn't, because they certainly weren't waiting for us in the spa in the evening to come for a massage at 7 pm. A bit rude from Mrs. Samantha's part to offer something as a gesture of goodwill that is almost impossible to use. They should work on their guest relations skills.

Another inconvenience was when the fuse blew out in the evening, we had to empty half of the closet so that the maintenance man could take out the shelves and the back wall of the closet to get to the fuses. He was kind, but the system is, to put it mildly, stupid.

Not enough maids when hotel was full.

One of the best accommodations I’ve experienced. Location is fabulous with breathtaking view, great walking paths. Restaurant offers delicious meals and staff in the whole hotel is extremely friendly and welcoming. They have great spa with sauna and well equipped fitness.

The view from the room was amazing. The location was great: a quiet location outside the busy centre of Dubrovnik. Staff was kind and breakfast was good.

What could be improved: Pillows were a bit too soft. After calling reception, a new pillow was given, so no complaints.
