Studio Amore

You know what caught me off guard about Studio Amore? It’s actually tucked away on this quiet little street called Za Rupama, which honestly sounds intimidating if you don’t speak Croatian, but it’s literally just “Behind the Holes” – referring to some old medieval storage spaces nearby. I mean, you’re still very much in Old Town, but you’re away from the chaos of Stradun where tourists are shoulder-to-shoulder taking selfies at 7 AM.

The building itself has that weathered Dubrovnik stone look that’s everywhere in the old city, but inside it feels more like staying at someone’s well-designed apartment than a typical hotel. The studios are compact – and I really mean compact, so don’t expect to spread out three suitcases – but they’re thoughtfully laid out with little kitchenettes that actually work. I loved having morning coffee on the small balcony while listening to the sounds of the city waking up below, which is mostly just the clatter of delivery trucks navigating those impossibly narrow streets and the occasional burst of laughter from early-rising locals heading to work. The whole vibe is unpretentious, which honestly feels refreshing when you’re in a place that can sometimes feel like a theme park version of itself.

What I appreciated most was how the location lets you experience Dubrovnik like less of a tourist. You’re close enough to pop over to the city walls when you want that iconic experience, but you can also duck into Café Bar Libertina around the corner for a proper Croatian coffee without paying tourist prices. The staff here actually seem to know the neighborhood – they pointed me toward this tiny bakery on Boskoviceva that I never would have found otherwise, and their burek was honestly better than anything I had near the main square. Sure, the 7.9 rating isn’t screaming luxury, and there were a few quirks like the shower pressure being hit-or-miss and the Wi-Fi dropping out occasionally, but those felt like minor trade-offs for the authentic feel of the place. Plus, parking in Old Town is basically impossible anyway, so the fact that they can help arrange something nearby is actually pretty valuable. If you’re looking for a place that feels more like a local crash pad than a sterile hotel room, and you don’t mind stairs (there’s no elevator, obviously), Studio Amore hits that sweet spot of being comfortable without trying too hard.
