You know what struck me first about Villa Marijo?
You know what struck me first about Villa Marijo? It’s tucked away on this narrow stone street called Od Nuncijate, and honestly, I almost walked right past it – which is actually perfect because it means you’re staying somewhere the cruise ship crowds haven’t discovered yet. The building itself has that weathered Dalmatian stone look that screams authentic Dubrovnik, not some modern hotel trying too hard to fit in.
The rooms are… well, they’re apartment-style, which I wasn’t expecting from the name. Mine had this little kitchenette that was surprisingly useful – I mean, eating out in Dubrovnik every meal will drain your wallet fast, and there’s a decent grocery store maybe a five-minute walk away. The owner, Marijo (I’m assuming that’s who he was), actually seemed to care about the place, which you can tell because the WiFi worked properly and the air conditioning didn’t sound like a dying motorcycle. The bathroom was on the smaller side, but the water pressure was solid and it stayed hot, which honestly matters more than marble countertops when you’re dealing with August heat.
Location-wise, this place is kind of genius. You’re close enough to the Old Town that you can walk there in maybe eight minutes – I timed it because I’m weird like that – but far enough away that you don’t hear drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM. The walk takes you past some local spots where actual Dubrovnik residents grab their morning coffee, and there’s this little bakery on the way that does these amazing burek pastries. Parking was… well, it’s Dubrovnik, so parking is always an adventure, but they actually help you figure it out instead of just shrugging and wishing you luck. The whole area gets pretty quiet after dinner time, which I loved after spending days navigating the madness of Stradun and the city walls. You can actually hear the sea from some of the rooms, which is this subtle reminder that you’re on the coast without the chaos of being right on the waterfront. For what you’re paying – and trust me, everything in Dubrovnik is expensive – this place delivers solid value with that personal touch you just don’t get at the bigger hotels.
