Look, I’ll be straight with you about Apartment Jany – it’s one of those places that grows on you once you figure out what you’re getting into. The location on Bunićeva Poljana is actually pretty sweet if you know Dubrovnik at all. You’re literally steps from the Rector’s Palace and that whole maze of limestone streets that everyone comes to see, but here’s the thing most people don’t realize – you’re also right in the thick of where cruise ship crowds funnel through during the day.

The apartment itself feels authentically Croatian in a way that’s hard to fake. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards, but there’s something honest about the place that I actually appreciated. The stone walls keep things surprisingly cool even in July heat, and you can hear the city waking up in the morning – church bells, delivery trucks navigating those narrow streets, locals heading to work before the tourist rush starts. The owner, Jany, has this no-nonsense approach that I found refreshing after dealing with overly polished hotel staff elsewhere. She’ll tell you exactly which restaurants are tourist traps (most of them on Stradun, honestly) and where locals actually eat.

What really struck me was how the evening light hits the small windows around sunset. You’re close enough to the main action that you can pop down to Dubrovnik Cathedral in two minutes, but the specific spot on Bunićeva Poljana gets this golden hour glow that made me understand why people have been living in these stone buildings for centuries. The practical stuff – well, you’re not getting luxury amenities here, but everything works. The shower has decent pressure, the little kitchenette is functional if you want to avoid restaurant prices for every meal, and the Wi-Fi actually connects (not always a given in Old Town’s thick walls).

Parking is going to be your biggest headache, just so you know. You’ll end up at one of the lots outside the walls and walking your luggage over the cobblestones – but honestly, that’s true for anywhere decent in the Old Town. The 7.6 rating makes sense to me because it’s not trying to be something it’s not. If you want a pool and room service, book somewhere in Lapad. But if you want to actually live in medieval Dubrovnik for a few days, wake up to the sound of the morning market being set up, and have Jany roll her eyes at you when you ask about the “best” gelato place (there are three decent ones, she’ll tell you), then this place delivers exactly what it promises.
