The thick stone walls – well, they’re not just for show, they actually block out most of the street noise from the late-night revelry.

Here’s what I really appreciated: you can walk to Stradun (the main pedestrian street) in about two minutes, but you’re tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant flow of cruise ship crowds right outside your window. The morning light filtering through those traditional shutters is something else – it hits different when you’re surrounded by 13th-century architecture. Getting there is a bit of an adventure since cars obviously can’t navigate these streets, but the hosts are really good about meeting you at the nearest access point. Just pack light or be prepared for a bit of a walk with your luggage over those smooth, sometimes slippery stones. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there – it’s not trying to be a luxury hotel, but it nails everything it sets out to do. I mean, where else can you grab fresh bread from a local bakery, walk to the city walls for sunrise (seriously, do this), and still feel like you’re living like a local rather than just another tourist?
