You know what struck me first about Tapera? It’s actually tucked away in this quiet residential pocket of Lapad where you can hear the cicadas in the evening instead of tour groups marching by. I mean, Dubrovnik’s old town gets all the Instagram love, but honestly – staying out here in Lapad means you’re living more like a local, and the apartment setup at Tapera really leans into that vibe.

The one-bedroom place I stayed in had this terrace that overlooks these lush, overgrown gardens that feel almost jungle-like in the morning mist. You’ll wake up to birds you’ve probably never heard before, and if you’re lucky, catch glimpses of the neighbor’s cat doing its rounds through the olive trees. The apartment itself is pretty straightforward – nothing fancy, but everything works and it’s got that lived-in comfort that beats sterile hotel rooms every time. The kitchen’s actually functional (not just for show), which is huge because you can walk to the little market on Šetalište Kralja Zvonimira and grab fresh bread and those amazing Croatian tomatoes. The bedroom stays surprisingly cool even in July, though I’d recommend bringing a small fan if you’re visiting during peak summer heat.

What really makes this place work is the location – you’re about a 15-minute walk to Lapad Beach, which honestly has better swimming than most of the rocky spots closer to old town. The bus stop is maybe 200 meters away, and bus line 6 will get you to Pile Gate in about 20 minutes, though it can get packed during tourist season. I actually ended up walking back most evenings because the route along the coast is gorgeous, especially around sunset. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving – there’s street parking but it fills up fast, so I’d ask about that when you book. The whole Lapad peninsula has this relaxed, almost small-town feel that’s perfect if you want to decompress after battling the crowds on the Stradun all day. There’s this little family-run konoba about five minutes away that makes the best black risotto, and the staff at Tapera actually pointed me toward it – they seem to genuinely know the neighborhood, not just the touristy spots. It’s the kind of place where you’ll end up staying longer than planned, reading on that terrace and forgetting you’re supposed to be sightseeing.
