Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Guest House Gugily? It’s tucked away on this quiet little street called Između vrta – which literally means “between gardens” – and honestly, that name makes perfect sense once you see the place. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by these lovely little pockets of greenery that most tourists rushing to the Old Town completely miss. The location is sort of genius actually, because you’re close enough to walk to Dubrovnik’s main attractions (maybe 10-15 minutes to Pile Gate), but far enough removed that you won’t hear the constant clatter of suitcase wheels on stone that echoes through the historic center all night long.

The guesthouse itself has this unpretentious, family-run feel that I really appreciated. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no fancy lobby or anything, just genuine Croatian hospitality from people who actually seem to care whether you enjoy your stay. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough, though don’t expect luxury touches at this price point. What I loved were the little details: windows that actually open properly (you’d be surprised how rare that is), decent water pressure in the shower, and – this matters more than you’d think – air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a jet engine. The WiFi worked consistently too, which isn’t always a given in older Croatian buildings.

Here’s the thing about staying in this part of Dubrovnik – you get to experience how locals actually live, not just the museum-piece version of the city. There’s a small grocery store within walking distance, and I discovered this fantastic little konoba (that’s a traditional tavern) just around the corner where locals go for dinner. The area gets genuinely quiet at night, which was perfect after long days of sightseeing and dealing with cruise ship crowds. Parking can be a bit tricky – street parking is hit or miss, and you’ll want to ask the hosts about the best spots. They know the neighborhood parking rhythm better than anyone. Is it perfect? Well, no – the furnishings are a bit dated, and the breakfast situation is pretty basic. But for a solid 3-star place with a 7.5 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises: a clean, comfortable base for exploring one of Croatia’s most beautiful cities without the tourist markup you’ll find closer to the walls.

  • Superb – Radana from Czech Republic – 21 June 2025 (9/10)

    Perfect place, cosy room

What could be improved: Lack of hand soap and toilet paper sometimes

  • Good – Mulholland from Ireland – 20 September 2024 (7/10)

    Location.

What could be improved: A bit tricky to find the address of the apartment.
Maybe a sign of the apartment name out on the street. Or the building.

  • Very good – Lucy from United Kingdom – 29 August 2024 (8/10)

Ideal location, friendly owners who helped us find it even very late at night.

What could be improved: Was a little tight for 3 people in a room, the pull out mattress was a slight squeeze

  • Very pleasant, great location – Kate from Australia – 6 July 2024 (8/10)

Kitchen was well stocked, bathrooms were good and the rooms were spacious

What could be improved: Creaky bed and noisy when people were coming and going

  • Very good – Gordon from United States – 27 July 2022 (8/10)

  • Perfect for a one day stay in Dubrovnik – Malin from Finland – 1 July 2024 (7/10)

The location was great! Just next to the Old Town Walls.

What could be improved: You could hear a lot from the other guest from the shared areas but the room was overall very spacious and nice!

  • Great location, but hard and stressful to gain entry! – Claire from Ireland – 11 May 2024 (6/10)

Location was fantastic, place was very clean and Had a great view from the kitchen balcony and bedroom.

What could be improved: The owner would not reply to me about how to get in the guesthouse. It's a lockbox, that is locked. I was not provided with the pin even though I wrote two messages and a text to try and get it. I arrived at the property at my allocated time and there was nobody to let me in. I had to ring booking.com help centre, which isn't the easiest to contact. If I had of had no coverage, internet or battery in my phone, I would've had to stay somewhere else. Very stressful way to start your holiday. It's the only thing that let it down, but it was pretty big thing and a very negative start to my holiday.

  • Great location, close to old town and historic district. Good value for the location – Daniel from Australia – 24 November 2023 (8/10)

I did not have breakfast. The location was excellent for the for the price I paid. There was no one else staying there at the time, so i had all the kitchen appliances and bathroom to myself.

  • The price and location are good but costumer service needs to improve a lot! – Jddavies from United Kingdom – 4 October 2023 (6/10)

    The location.

What could be improved: Poor communication before check in (I had to call them 4 times and send several messages on Whataspp to get the code for the lockbox with front key. This was quite stressful. Also, this morning I was awaken at 6am by a guest having shower which is quite noisy for room 1 (next to the toilet).
