Look, I've stayed in plenty of places around Dubrovnik over the years, and Holiday Home Vera is honestly one of those finds that makes you want to keep quiet about it – but in a good way.
Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places around Dubrovnik over the years, and Holiday Home Vera is honestly one of those finds that makes you want to keep quiet about it – but in a good way. It’s tucked away on Ulica od Čempresa, which is this quiet residential street that most tourists never stumble across. You’re actually in a proper Croatian neighborhood here, not some tourist bubble, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The morning routine includes genuine local coffee smells drifting from nearby apartments and the sound of people heading to actual jobs, not just shuffling around in flip-flops with cameras.
What really got me was how the owners clearly understand what travelers actually need versus what hotels think we need. The space feels like someone’s well-appointed home – because it basically is – with those thick stone walls that keep everything cool even when Dubrovnik’s summer heat gets brutal. You know what I loved? The kitchen actually has proper knives and decent pots, not those sad hotel kitchenette basics that can barely handle instant coffee. There’s this lovely terrace where you can sit with morning coffee and hear the city waking up below, but you’re far enough from the Stradun madness that you won’t get woken up by drunk tourists at 2 AM (trust me on this one). The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the whole place, which honestly shouldn’t be noteworthy but somehow still is in a lot of Croatian accommodations.
The location is where Holiday Home Vera really shines, though you need to know what you’re getting into. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the Old Town walls – not the grueling uphill climb you get from some places, but not right in the thick of things either. This is perfect if you want to duck in and out of tourist central without being trapped in it. There’s a little grocery store maybe three minutes away where locals actually shop, and the woman who runs it started recognizing me after day two. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle (welcome to Dubrovnik), but the hosts know all the tricks and actually give you real, usable advice instead of just shrugging. During shoulder season it’s pretty peaceful, though I imagine July and August get busier with families – the setup would work really well for kids, honestly. The whole experience feels less like staying in accommodation and more like borrowing a friend’s place while they’re away. It’s got that four-star comfort level without any of the stuffiness, and the hosts clearly care about getting the details right rather than just checking boxes.
