Everyone obsesses over staying inside the Old Town walls, but honestly, some of the best experiences happen when you venture just outside – which is exactly where you’ll find Matušić Guest House. Tucked away on Pod Đurđevom crkvom (yeah, I know, Croatian street names are a mouthful), this little gem sits in a neighborhood that actually feels like people live there, not just tourists passing through.

The location is sort of perfect in that understated way – you’re maybe a 10-minute walk from Pile Gate, close enough that you can easily pop back for a midday break when the Old Town gets stupidly crowded around noon. But here’s the thing: you’re positioned right below St. George’s Church (that’s what Pod Đurđevom crkvom means, by the way), and the whole area has this lovely residential vibe where you’ll hear church bells instead of tour groups at 7 AM. The owners, I mean, they clearly know their stuff – the place has that 9.6 rating for a reason, and after staying there, it makes total sense.

What really got me was the attention to detail that you only notice when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms feel authentically Croatian without being kitschy – think stone walls and wooden shutters, but with proper air conditioning and surprisingly good WiFi. The breakfast spread actually changes based on what’s seasonal and local, not just the same hotel buffet nonsense. And parking – God, parking in Dubrovnik is normally a nightmare – but they’ve got it sorted, which saves you about 20 euros a day and a lot of stress. The family running the place (because it really does feel family-run) knows exactly when to chat and when to let you be, which is rarer than you’d think. During the crazy summer months when the Old Town is basically Disneyland, you can retreat here and remember why you fell in love with Croatia in the first place. I’d honestly stay here again, and I’m pretty picky about these things.
