Soleil Palace

You know what? I’ve walked past the Soleil Palace probably dozens of times over the years, and I always wondered what it was like inside that gorgeous stone building on Zlatarićeva. Well, I finally got to stay there last month, and honestly – it’s one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special without the crazy crowds that hit some of the other Old Town hotels.

The location is actually perfect if you know Dubrovnik at all. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main drag (Stradun), but tucked away on this quiet little street where you won’t have tour groups marching past your window at 7 AM. I mean, you’ll still hear the morning church bells from St. Blaise – but that’s part of the charm, right? The building itself is this beautifully restored 16th-century palace, and they’ve done something really smart with the renovation. Instead of trying to make everything look brand new, they kept all the original stone work and wooden beams, then added modern touches that actually make sense. The rooms have this wonderful old-world feel but – thank god – the air conditioning works perfectly (crucial in July, trust me).

What really impressed me was how the staff actually knows the city. Not just the obvious stuff like “Rector’s Palace is five minutes away,” but genuine insider knowledge. The guy at reception told me about this tiny bakery on Prijeko where locals go for burek at 6 AM, and he was absolutely right. They also sorted out restaurant reservations at places I couldn’t get into on my own, which honestly saved my trip. The breakfast situation is solid too – they serve it in this incredible stone-walled room that used to be part of the original palace courtyard. Nothing fancy, but good Croatian coffee and pastries from a local bakery, plus they’ll pack you something to go if you’re doing an early morning wall walk.

Here’s the thing about staying in Old Town – parking is always a nightmare, but they’ve got an arrangement with a garage about ten minutes away, and they’ll actually walk you there the first time so you don’t get lost in those winding streets. Small touch, but it matters when you’re dragging luggage around medieval cobblestones. The rooms vary quite a bit (it’s an old building, after all), so I’d definitely request something facing the courtyard if you’re a light sleeper. The street-facing ones are charming with those old wooden shutters, but you’ll catch some noise from late-night revelers heading back from Banje Beach.

I guess what I’m saying is – if you want that authentic Dubrovnik experience without feeling like you’re roughing it, this place hits the sweet spot. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in town, but everything works, the location can’t be beat, and you’ll actually feel like you’re staying in Dubrovnik, not just some generic hotel that happens to be there. Plus, at a 9.7 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re doing something right.
